Manchester United's Anthony Martial will start against Hull if he shines against Wigan, says Jose Mourinho

  • Shaw hasn't played for United since November 30 against West Ham

Jose Mourinho has challenged Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw to earn their places at Manchester United after confirming that both players will start against Wigan in Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round tie at Old Trafford.

The two 21-year-olds have struggled to win over Mourinho since he succeeded Louis van Gaal in the summer.

Martial spent last weekend in Paris after he was dropped from the squad to play Stoke, with Mourinho insisting that the France winger cannot continue wasting his first-team opportunities.

The United boss will send Martial out against Wigan urging him to show that he deserves to keep his place against Hull City in the Premier League on Wednesday.

'I don't speak with the players about how they take it (being dropped),' said Mourinho, who will also rest goalkeeper David De Gea.

'He will play Sunday and, if Sunday he plays magnificent, he will play against Hull City the next match. It's simple.'

Shaw has been fit for a number of weeks after recovering from the groin injury he suffered in late November, but has been forced to wait for his chance with Mourinho demanding more from the England left back.

However, Shaw will start against Wigan and it's understood that he expects to face Hull as well.

After advancing to the EFL Cup final despite losing the second leg of their semi-final at Hull on Thursday, Mourinho has warned his players to expect a tough challenge from a Wigan side managed since November by former United reserve-team boss Warren Joyce.

'He took the risk and accepted the challenge,' said Mourinho. 'He left a good situation in our club to try to go to what we call 'men's football' and, for sure, he will come with a team that's very aggressive and well organised defensively.

'The manager is also emotional. He knows us and he will come with special motivation to play against his old club.'
