Steve Morrow is a contender to replace Andries Jonker as Arsenal academy manager after the Dutchman was appointed Wolfsburg manager on Monday.

Sportsmail understands Jonker’s job at Arsenal beyond this season was unclear and would have been discussed in the summer regardless of his decision to leave for Germany.

Jonker worked as normal over the weekend; completing his duties at the club’s London Colney base on Friday and Saturday.

But Wolfsburg’s interest is understood to have accelerated on Sunday with the respected coach indicating to the German club he would be willing to take the job.

Promoting from within their current academy set-up will be considered by Arsenal as they look for Jonker’s replacement Morrow, who is current head of scouting for the club’s academy, is highly-respected and could be an option if the club decide to make an internal appointment.

If the club decide to make an external appointment, Gunners legend Dennis Bergkamp - who is currently working Ajax - and Barcelona youth coach Pep Segura will be considered.
