Just over one week after the summer transfer window opened, Premier League clubs have splashed a total of £571million, making it already the fifth-highest-spending window ever.

Romelu Lukaku’s £75m switch from Everton to Manchester United and Arsenal’s £53m capture of Alexandre Lacazette have fuelled an early-summer surge in spending since the window opened on July 1.

With the vast majority of the window remaining - it closes on August 31 at 11pm - and plenty of massive deals currently being negotiated, this summer’s spending looks set to challenge the record set last summer, when an incredible £1.165billion was forked out.

Chelsea’s £70m pursuit of Alvaro Morata and the club’s tug-of-war with United over £40m Tiemoue Bakayoko are just two of the potential transfers that could soon push this year's total even higher.

Last year saw the Premier League total spend top £1bn for the first time, thanks to the record £5.1bn television deal. Thirteen of the 20 clubs broke their transfer records, and Paul Pogba became the most expensive footballer ever at £89m.

This year United have again flashed the most cash, with Victor Lindelof joining from Benfica for £30.7m and Lukaku’s big move adding up to a £106m outlay.

Local rivals Manchester City are not far behind on £78m after Bernardo Silva was signed from Monaco for £43m and goalkeeper Ederson was prised from Benfica for £35m.

Arsenal’s deal for Lacazette puts them in third while Liverpool are fourth after bringing in Mohamed Salah from Roma for £39m and nabbing young Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke, whose fee will be settled by a tribunal.

Surprisingly, new boys Huddersfield are fifth on the spending list so far, with the £10m deal for Aaron Mooy being the biggest of their £36m-worth of signings, which also includes Laurent Depoitre, Thomas Ince, Danny Williams, Steve Mounie, Scott Malone and Mathias Jorgensen.

Bournemouth have already laid out over £30m, with Nathan Ake (£20m) and Asmir Begovic (£10m) arriving from Chelsea, plus the free transfer of Jermain Defoe.

Yet four clubs have yet to spend a thing so far, with fans of Crystal Palace, Stoke, Tottenham and West Ham still waiting for their first new signings of the summer.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have paid Roma £31m for Antonio Rudiger, but have a net spend of minus £34m, having sold the likes of Juan Cuadrado (to Juventus for £17m), Begovic, Ake, Christian Atsu (Newcastle, £6.2m), Solanke, and Bertrand Traore (Lyon £8.8m), while releasing captain John Terry.
