Manchester United have named Michael Carrick as their new captain... but will he have the same success as former skippers such as Eric Cantona, Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney?

  • Michael Carrick has been appointed Manchester United's new captain
  • Midfielder takes over the armband from Everton-bound Wayne Rooney
  • Bryan Robson was the first United skipper of the Premier League era
  • Steve Bruce, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane all had their time as on-field leader
  • Defenders Gary Neville and Nemanja Vidic preceded Rooney as captain

Michael Carrick has been named as Manchester United's new captain following the departure of Wayne Rooney to Everton.

The 35-year-old has been a reliable presence in the United midfield for a number of years and now has the added responsibility of the armband.

Carrick tweeted: 'I'm privileged to be captain of this incredible football club @manutd, I love the place and I'll give everything to achieve more success.'

He becomes the eighth captain United have had during the Premier League era and we take a look back at the others here.

BRYAN ROBSON

Captain 1982-1994

The original Manchester United 'Captain Marvel' of the modern era, fiercely competitive midfielder Robson remains the longest-serving skipper in United's history.

Manager Ron Atkinson presented Robson with the armband just a year after his British record transfer from West Brom and he held the accolade until his move to Middlesbrough in 1994.

United found themselves largely in their shadow of their Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton throughout the 1980s, but Robson did lift the FA Cup in 1983 and 1985.

The arrival of Alex Ferguson in 1986 inspired a slow transformation of United's fortunes, and Robson helped them to another FA Cup triumph in 1990 and the European Cup Winners' Cup a year later.

But the advent of the Premier League in 1992 heralded the start of a United dominance and Robson's Old Trafford career was crowned with back-to-back league titles in 1993 and 1994.

It was a just reward for a wholly committed, dependable and often inspirational midfielder.

STEVE BRUCE

Captain 1992-1996 (Jointly with Robson from 1992 and 1994)

As injuries curtailed the number of appearances Robson could manage in the 1992-93 campaign, Ferguson turned increasingly to Bruce and they shared the armband for a couple of years.

That explains why the pair jointly lifted the Premier League trophy when United ended their long wait for the championship in 1993.

The following season saw Bruce become the first English captain to achieve the Double of league title and FA Cup within the same season in the 20th century.

Bruce, an uncompromising defender and natural leader, was still technically captain when United won another Double in 1996 but injury ruled him out of the FA Cup final with Liverpool.

Eric Cantona, who captained United at Wembley and scored the late winner, insisted that Bruce should be the one to lift the trophy, but he declined in what turned out to be his final act at United.

ERIC CANTONA

Captain 1996-1997

The departure of Bruce to Birmingham City in the summer of 1996 saw the popular decision to appoint Cantona as captain.

The darling of the Old Trafford crowd for his audacity, tenacity and stunning goals, Cantona had just inspired United to their second Double win after returning from the suspension imposed for his infamous kung-fu kick.

In the end, Cantona skippered United for just one season as he announced his retirement in the summer of 1997, aged just 30.

However, it was a successful campaign, with the Frenchman scoring 15 times en route to another Premier League title win.

ROY KEANE

Captain 1997-2005

Keane was Ferguson's lieutenant in the midfield long before he was appointed Cantona's replacement in 1997.

Known for his absolute commitment and abrasive tackles, the Irishman had the ability to drag United to victory even when the cause seemed lost.

Having watched most of the trophyless 1997-98 season from the sidelines because of injury, Keane atoned in spectacular fashion as United won a Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League the following season.

His finest hour on a football pitch came against Juventus in the Champions League semi-final, when he selflessly inspired the team to victory despite knowing he'd miss the final after picking up a yellow card.

Keane won three more Premier League titles as captain before relations with Ferguson deteriorated following criticism of his team-mates' professionalism and he left United in 2005.

GARY NEVILLE

Captain 2005-2011

One of the players who came to best epitomise Manchester United, right-back Neville graduated from the club's academy to win 20 major trophies in the space of two incredibly successful decades.

There was little surprise or complaint when Neville was appointed as Keane's replacement in 2005 and he would inspire a renewed period of United dominance thanks to young stars such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

With Neville as captain, United won further Premier League titles between 2007 and 2009, plus their holy grail of the Champions League in 2008.

Nobody could question Neville's passionate commitment to the United cause, as shown by his wild celebrations in front of the Liverpool fans after a late Rio Ferdinand winner in 2006.

He continued to serve as club captain until his retirement in 2011.

NEMANJA VIDIC

Captain 2011-2014

With Neville injured for much of the 2010-11 season, his defensive colleague Vidic took over the responsibilities of captaincy more and more often.

The Serb, who quickly endeared himself to United fans with his full-bloodied approach, was the natural leader in the side.

United won two Premier League titles with Vidic as skipper, though he did struggle himself with back and knee injuries.

With his body faltering, Vidic departed Old Trafford for Inter Milan in 2014 with his place in the affections of fans assured.

WAYNE ROONEY

Captain 2014-2017

Vidic's departure left United needing another captain and the natural choice for incoming manager Louis van Gaal in 2014 was Wayne Rooney, coming up to a decade with the club.

Given the volume of matches Rooney had played, not to mention the heaps of goals scored and bounty of trophies won, this was a popular decision.

But Rooney's time as skipper coincided with a drought of success for the team and a personal decline in his fortunes, though he did end his long wait for FA Cup success in 2016.

Despite the added responsibility, Rooney ended up United's leading goalscorer in both seasons of the Van Gaal reign, and he overtook Bobby Charlton as the club's all-time leading scorer earlier this year.

But Rooney gradually fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho and was duly allowed to return to his boyhood club Everton on a free transfer last week.

His replacement as captain, Carrick, will hope to usher in another period of United dominance.
