Manchester United full back Luke Shaw serenaded at training in Los Angeles as American fans wish him a happy birthday

Manchester United full back Luke Shaw celebrated reaching the grand old age of 22 by being serenaded by a group of adoring Red Devils fans as he arrived at training in Los Angeles.

The defender, signed from Southampton for £27million in 2014, was greeted by a horde of United fans as he arrived for the club's session at their pre-season base at UCLA in California.

Supporters were pressed up against the railings at the complex as they attempted to get a glimpse of their heroes, while many tried to get autographs from the passing players as they dangled shirts in their direction.

Shaw smiled as he approached the fans who were singing happy birthday to him, with the moment captured and then published on the club's social media channels.

The youngster has achieved a great deal in his 22 years on the planet, having made the grade with Saints before graduating to Manchester United, where he has made 47 appearances and played a part in last season's Europa League and EFL Cup double. He has also won seven senior England caps.

But he has not had an easy ride and faced an uncertain future after being criticised by the United boss Jose Mourinho on a number of occasions last season. However it's understood that Mourinho has been impressed by Shaw’s attitude and conditioning over the summer.

United are training in LA ahead of their pre-season opener on Saturday, which sees them take on hometown club LA Galaxy before a clash with Real Salt Lake in Utah, ahead of a game with rivals Manchester City in Houston, Texas.

United's pre-season has not been without controversy, though, owing to a disagreement with back-to-back European champions Real Madrid, who are also in town as they prepare for the new campaign.

Having arrived in LA first, United have stolen a march on the Spanish club by securing their favoured hotel and training base, which comes with better facilities and increased privacy.

The fall-out between the two clubs has been so bad that organisers of the International Champions Cup and promoters Relevent Sports have had to step in to keep the peace. One insider described the situation as ‘a nightmare’ on Wednesday night.

The two teams play each other twice this summer, with their ICC clash in Santa Clara on July 23 preceding their European Super Cup clash in Macedonia on August 8.
