Man United boss Jose Mourinho defends Romelu Lukaku after £75m signing misfires on debut against LA Galaxy

CHRIS WHEELER: Jose Mourinho defended Romelu Lukaku after Manchester United's new £75million signing misfired on his debut against LA Galaxy in Carson.

United won comfortably 5-2 at the StubHub Center in the opening game of their summer tour as Marcus Rashford scored twice in the opening 20 minutes.

But Lukaku, who replaced the young England striker at half-time when United changed their entire starting line-up, missed a wonderful chance to get off the mark within four minutes of coming on and scuffed another opportunity wide.

Mohamed Salah can be Liverpool's difference maker after opening goal at Wigan, says Dejan Lovren

Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren believes the arrival of winger Mohamed Salah will help them break down the stubborn defences which caused them so many problems last season.

Jurgen Klopp's side displayed scintillating form in the first half the campaign but the loss of speedy forward Sadio Mane to the Africa Cup of Nations coincided with a slump in form.

Their problems were compounded when the Senegal international's season was prematurely ended by a knee problem in early April, and with Daniel Sturridge also missing two months from February with injury the Reds were left looking rather one-paced and easy to defend against.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku can show no weaknesses if he wants to shine, warns Wayne Rooney

JOE BERNSTEIN: Wayne Rooney has pinpointed mental strength as the main test for Romelu Lukaku at Manchester United and warned that it is harder for today's new signings at Old Trafford than when he joined the club in 2004.

Rooney, who last week rejoined Everton as Lukaku moved in the opposite direction, told the 24-year-old Belgian that any weakness will be exposed at England's biggest club.

'Playing for Manchester United is a test of character,' said Rooney. 'You've got to be strong enough mentally to accept the challenge. United are a football club that demands success. Romelu has to be strong enough to take up that challenge.

Stoke set £22.5m asking price for Marko Arnautovic as they wait for third West Ham bid

JOE BERNSTEIN: Stoke City have set an asking price of £22.5million for West Ham target Marko Arnautovic in order to try and sign three new players including Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma.

Stoke rejected a second West Ham offer of £20million last week because 10% of the fee would have gone out on additional payments like agents fees and bonuses.

They want to clear £20million before agreeing to a deal, particularly as manager Mark Hughes built Stoke's team around Arnautovic last season and is reluctant to see the Austrian winger leave.
