Not for the first time at the Emirates Stadium, a Frenchman stole the show. Unfortunately for Arsenal, it was Steven N’Zonzi.

Alexandre Lacazette scored on his first start at his new home following his club record £52million arrival from Lyon.

But the forward was upstaged by N’Zonzi, who scored an exquisite winner to inflict defeat on the Gunners in their final pre-season clash before next week’s Community Shield against champions Chelsea.

Ridiculously, Arsenal still won the Emirates Cup on goals scored even though Sevilla won both games over the weekend after Saturday's victory over RB Leipzig.

They say winning silverware becomes a habit. You doubt, however, this trophy will live long in the Arsenal players' memories.

Wenger fielded a completely new team from the side that started Saturday’s comprehensive 5-2 win over Benfica.

The Gunners were far from convincing during the opening exchanges and were lucky not to fall behind in the 15th minute when Wissam Ben Yedder struck a post after Ever Banega defence-splitting pass.

Sevilla were annoyed they weren’t awarded a penalty just moments later when Nolito’s attempted cross appeared to strike academy prospect Joe Willock on the arm.

Arsenal weathered Sevilla’s early storm and should have taken as 23rd minute lead - but Hector Bellerin somehow blazed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross over the bar from six yards.

Wenger and his assistant Steve Bould saw the funny side of the Spaniard’s wastefulness. They won’t be so jovial if the same occurs once the Premier League season kicks-off.

Danny Welbeck was next to squander an excellent chance, firing wide with his right foot when he really should have struck with his left following a powerful run past Daniel Carrico.

Aaron Ramsey then fired wide after a tenacious solo run as Arsenal asserted themselves.

Sevilla remained dangerous though, Nolito’s audacious dipping volley from 30 yards after Mohamed Elneny’s tame defensive header just creeping past Petr Cech’s post.

Indeed, they should have taken the lead in first half stoppage time but Nolito chose to square to Ben Yedder instead of taking the more decisive option of shooting, his attempted pass cut out by Laurent Koscielny.

And the Spaniards took the lead four minutes after the restart with a superbly worked goal as Joaquin Correa bamboozled the Arsenal defence with a clever dummy before latching onto Ben Yedder’s deft pass to finish past Cech.

WHY DID ARSENAL WIN THE EMIRATES CUP DESPITE LOSING?

Each team is awarded an additional point for each goal scored in the Emirates Cup.

Arsenal scored six and were therefore given that many bonus points.

After Sevilla's two victories, the points were level, which meant goals scored was used as the deciding factor.

Arsenal scored six to Sevilla's three and therefore won the tournament.

Lacazette squandered an excellent opportunity to level nine minutes later as he fired straight at Sergio Rico after superb build-up play from Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey.

But the France international wasn’t so wasteful in the 61st minute when he tapped home from five yards after stunning wing play from Oxlade-Chamberlain.

In the grand scheme of things, his second pre-season goal meant very little.

Score against Leicester in 12 days time and it’ll mean the world.

But Sevilla were intent on spoiling the party as they regained the lead with a beautiful goal, this time from former Stoke midfielder N’Zonzi.

Another dummy, this time from substitute Paulo Henrique Ganso, did the damage, N’Zonzi sweetly firing home the winner from 25 yards after his team-mate’s deceptive ploy.
