Manchester United have returned home following a long pre-season taking in three countries and two continents. 

Jose Mourinho and his players landed back late on Wednesday night after playing their last friendly match against Sampdoria in Dublin.

The game ended a pre-season schedule which saw them play a series of high-profile matches in the USA, before facing Valerenga in Oslo.

While most of the players went from the airport back to their homes in the Manchester area, one of their number had another plane to catch. 


Romelu Lukaku was whisked away to a private jet, which was waiting to take him back to his home country of Belgium.

Lukaku is going to stay in Brussels for two days, before returning to join his team-mates ahead of the coming Premier League season.

The players were greeted by fans as they arrived back in Manchester, with Mourinho accosted for a number of selfies.

United have had a successful pre-season on the whole, with a series of good results allied with big-money signings in Lukaku and Nemanja Matic. 

They beat Sampdoria 2-1 in the Irish capital, following wins over rivals Manchester City in the US, a penalty victory over Real Madrid, and a narrow 1-0 loss to Barcelona.

They seem to have enjoyed the tour, with Ander Herrera posting a picture to Instagram of the players on the team bus, captioned: 'Going back to Manchester with a smile.'
