As Arsenal waited to collect the Community Shield at Wembley this afternoon, Antonio Conte wandered about, arms folded and head down, with the look of a man who was a little bemused.
How did his team lose his game? Why did his goalkeeper take his team’s second penalty in the shoot-out? How did his new £70m striker Alvaro Morata miss the target completely from 12 yards? Just what is an ABBA shoot-out anyway?

But can they finally lay challenge for the Premier League title this term? The Gunners kick off the new season when they host Leicester City on Friday but that's all from me here.
All the fallout to come on the homepage but until next time thanks for following and cheerio.
PS. Keep an eye out for that Courtois penalty dropping out the sky...
Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, who are not in match attire, lift the Shield.
Just a quick mention that we still haven't seen Courtoi's penalty land.
And the Arsenal manager knows it well by now at this time of year. This is the third Community Shield win for the Gunners in four years as Wenger leads his team up the Wembley steps.
This may be a minor competition but the Blues players look totally dejected. Not that I'm expecting smiles but Antonio Conte and his players look rather frustrated as they collect their runners-up medals.
In no small thanks to clinical penalties from Arsenal, and some dreadful efforts from Chelsea with Thibaut Courtois firing well over and Alvaro Morata scuffing wide.
Arsene Wenger meanwhile adds the Community Shield to the FA Cup following wins over the champions in recent months. Not bad for a manger whose supporters were protesting for him to leave because he was 'killing the club' a few months back.
Arsenal win the Community Shield
Olivier Giroud scores
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scores
Alvaro Morata misses
Thibaut Courtois (yes, the keeper) misses
Nacho Monreal scores
Theo Walcott scores
Gary Cahill scores
Chelsea will take the first penalty at the Arsenal supporters' end.
And not just because the winner takes it all. ABBA is the new penalty system trialled in international competitions this summer.
In short, Team A will take the first penalty, before Team B takes two, Team A takes two etc. What doesn't change it's still the best of five penalty kicks each before sudden death. Got it?
Penalty shoot-out to be contested
90+2min: And Chelsea nearly grab it, with Cesc Fabregas's delivery into the box headed just wide by Morata at the near post.
90min: There will be five added minutes - call it a mini-extra-time - for either side to find a winner otherwise this contest goes to penalties.
87min: Arsenal are now handing out debuts as 17-year-old Reiss Nelson replaces Danny Welbeck.
86min: Arsenal are pressing for a winner now and they have four minutes to grab it. Should this game be level after the 90 minutes is over it goes straight to penalties.
83min: And following that equaliser, Chelsea make a change to send on Charly Musonda for Willian.
82min: And from the free-kick, Arsenal level! The ball is pumped into the box for Sead Kolasinac to head past Courtois on his debut.

80min: Pedro has injured himself following a very poor sliding challenge, but after recovering to get to his feet he is sent off by the referee after sliding in on Elneny.
79min: Outrageous from Willian whose pass with the outside of his boot splits the Arsenal back four to find Morata at the far post, who fails to turn a shot on goal.
A second change for Chelsea as Antonio Rudiger also makes his debut by replacing Alonso.
76min: What a save! Granit Xhaka must be nearly 30 yards out as he slices a dipping shot across goal, only for Courtois to leap high to his right to tip the ball wide for an Arsenal corner.
74min: First change for Chelsea and a large cheer from the Blues fans greets the arrival of Alvaro Morata for his debut as he replaces Batshuyai.
73min: Uncertainty is creeping into the Chelsea back three. Marcos Alonso's sliced clearance into the air puts pressure on his own defence, while Gary Cahill tried to allow a ball to run through for Thibaut Courtois only for the Chelsea keeper to not be interested, forcing the defender to clear to Alonso.
70min: There are six changes at Chelsea's disposal but they still haven't made any despite the likes of Alvaro Morata warming up on the touchline.
67min: So following Per Mertesacker's withdrawal earlier, Arsenal have now made half their changes as Walcott and Girould replace Alex Iwobi and Alexandre Lacazette.
65min: Teams are allowed to make six changes in the Community Shield and Arsenal are preparing a double switch as Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott prepare to come.
62min: Arsenal continue to look the better side right now as Luiz gets across to make a crucial challenge to deny Welbeck a low cross into the box.
59min: A fluke nearly brings Arsenal level. Mohamed Elneny's cross from the right wrong foots Courtois who has to dive back to goal to punch behind the midfielder's delivery that was heading into the net at the near post.
58min: After some treatment, Luiz will be able to continue as Arsenal start to force the issue on the pitch.
Here is how Moses opened the scoring:
55min: Both teams have struggled to clear set-pieces today, and there is another stoppage in play following a clash of heads between Gary Cahill and David Luiz after an Arsenal corner.
Cahill, whose elbow has already seen Per Mertesacker go off injured, looks like he has come off better, after a collision with David Luiz.
That repairs some of the damage from being sent off in May's FA Cup final at least.
51min: Improvements from Arsenal. Now it's Chelsea making poor clearances but despite the ball falling for Mohamed Elneny 20 yards out, the midfielder can only flash a shot well off target.
49min: Arsenal are all over the place. Chelsea threaten again as Cesc Fabregas's cross is cleared, but only as far as Michy Batshuyai whose off-balance volley is comfortably saved by Cech.
46min: Well that didn't take long. Granit Xhaka's poor clearance from a corner is headed back into the box by Gary Cahill, and it allows Victor Moses to run onto the ball before slotting home.
Here is former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg's take on the Willian dive.
An encouraging enough start for Arsenal's £53million summer signing, who has been involved with the Gunners' attacks and was perhaps a tad unfortunate to strike the post with his curled effort from the edge of the box.
Or you could be harsh and claim that for that amount of money he should be scoring those all day long. You can make further judgments here with our match zone where you can see all his first half stats, along with his heat map
So did he try to con the referee or did Willian genuinely trip over his own feet? Slam dunk yellow card for me, but what about you? Judge for yourself...
45+1min: Three minutes added on following that Mertesacker injury. Two Arsenal chances. One save made. While Iwobi fires straight at Courtois an effort moments later from Welbeck flies way off target.
43min: Outrageous skill from David Luiz, who with his back to goal and under pressure from Danny Welbeck casually heads blind to Thibaut Courtois, who collects. It's greeted by warm applause inside the ground and so it should be. That was incredibly brave defending.
40min: Chelsea are starting to get on top as this half comes to a close. Alonso tries to pick out Willian with a cut-back on the edge of the box, but the Brazilian's effort is blocked before Arsenal's counter comes to nothing.
37min: Penalty to Chelsea? No!
Instead Willian is booked for diving after evading a challenge from Bellerin and going to ground after clipping his own heels.
Excellent decision from the referee.
35min: Another fine stop from Cech. Willian squares the ball for Pedro who runs in on goal before firing a little too close to Cech, although it's struck powerfully enough to force the Arsenal keeper to parry away.
Meanwhile Alonso is booked following a foul.
33min: On comes Kolasinac, and not a moment too soon as Victor Moses forces a mandatory, if not expected, save from Cech at his near post.
31min: Arsenal are still playing with 10 men for the moment as they look to send on Sead Kolasinac for his debut in place of Mertesacker
28min: A stoppage in play as Per Mertesacker's head has been split open after being struck by Gary Cahill's arm as the duo battled for a header following a Chelsea corner.
The German is ok but will probably not continue with his head bleeding quite heavily.
25min: More of that rustiness. Bellerin's hospital pass back to Petr Cech puts the Arsenal keeper in trouble who has to slide to clear the ball in front of Michy Batshuayi.
Moments later Marcos Alonso is very clumsy with his sliding challenge on Lacazette and is perhaps lucky to avoid being booked.
22min: Off the post! Lacazette leads an Arsenal counter attack with help from Bellerin and Welbeck before receiving the ball back on the edge of the box.
The striker attempts to curl the ball into the bottom corner but despite Thibaut Courtois looking well beaten, the ball cannons off the woodwork before bouncing out to safety.
19min: After 10 minutes of Arsenal domination, Chelsea have at least come into the game without offering much of a threat. Aside from a rush out his box in the first few seconds, Petr Cech has had nothing to do.
16min: A day late and a dollar short but although Hector Bellerin attempted to play the ball, his late sliding challenge on Marcos Alonso means the Arsenal full-back joins Azpilicueta in the book.
13min: First yellow card for Cesar Azpilicueta and he can have no complaints after pulling back on Welbeck's shirt to concede a free-kick.
11min: It's been all Arsenal so far. Another short passing move sees Mohamed Elneny thread Alex Iwobi into the box, but Marcos Alonso forces the midfielder out wide to deny a shot on goal.
8min: Another Arsenal chance. A ball floated forward into the box for Danny Welbeck sees the striker get his head on it, but it is directed straight at Courtois.
7min: And the Gunners should be in front! Alex Iwobi effortlessly jogs past David Luiz to get to the byline, before his cut-back just evades Alexandre Lacazette as the ball skips across the six-yard box to safety.
5min: Arsenal, who have won their last eight games at Wembley, have started brighter as the ball is worked out wide to Hector Bellerin.
The full-back in space has time to deliver a low cross but Thibaut Courtois claims easily.
3min: The new season may be close to underway but there is still plenty of rust in the system it seems as following some slick Arsenal passing, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain boots the ball straight out of play for a goal kick.

Here is a reminder of the team news:
Arsenal: Cech, Holding, Mertesacker, Monreal, Bellerin, Elneny, Xhaka, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Welbeck, Iwobi, Lacazette.
Subs: Giroud, Ospina, Walcott, Maitland-Niles, Kolasinac, Nelson, Joseph Willock.
Chelsea: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Moses, Fabregas, Kante, Alonso, Willian, Pedro, Batshuayi.
Subs: Caballero, Rudiger, Morata, Musonda, Christensen, Scott, Boga.
Only two years ago in fact, when an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain strike gave Arsenal a 1-0 win over Jose Mourinho's side. Fair to say the Blues' never did quite recover from that...
ADAM CRAFTON: In the shadows of a high-rise tower block on the outskirts of Lyon's city centre, you will find the spiritual home of Arsenal’s marquee summer signing, Alexandre Lacazette.
The family of the £52million striker can still be found in a flat on the 13th floor of the building but endless hours of Lacazette’s childhood were spent just across the road at the youth club L’Elan Sportif.
So with both teams at the stadium, coming up next is the team news from Wembley.
Antonio Conte has at least. I assume he has brought his team with him.
The Chelsea manager has before this game shared concerns over his team's lack of spending this summer... despite spending over £140million.
Well, I call it a match programme. It looks more like a magazine. At £5 it certainly has a glossy mag price.
Safety barriers have been installed on the run up to Wembley Way to protect supporters arriving at Wembley Park tube station from any road traffic.
Is this really necessary? It's a changing room not a fancy bar. Most importantly though at least the kit is all laid out and ready for the Gunners' arrival.
Not Wayne though, instead it's the Everton striker's wife Coleen who is present as part of handing out community awards.
And although it is a glorified friendly, it is at Wembley and there is silverware to be won as well as local bragging rights.
So good afternoon all and welcome to Sportsmail's live coverage of the Community Shield as Chelsea take on Arsenal.
