Arsenal bring the curtains down on their famous back four for good while Chelsea need new faces: What we learned from Wembley showpiece

  • Arsene Wenger looks certain to continue with a back three for next season
  • Danny Welbeck appears fresh after putting his injury problems behind him
  • Antonio Conte is less than satisfied with the current state of his Chelsea squad
  • Willian was unlucky to receive a booking for diving in the first half at Wembley

Arsenal beat Chelsea on penalties in the Community Shield on Sunday following a 1-1 draw to make it nine Wembley wins in a row for Arsene Wenger's side.

Chelsea took the lead just after the interval through Victor Moses but after Pedro was shown a red card for a late challenge, Arsenal new boy Sead Kolasinac headed home to send the game to penalties.

Following misses from Alvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois, who was bizarrely chosen to take a spot-kick, Olivier Giroud slotted home the winning penalty.

Here's Sportsmail's SAMI MOKBEL with six things we learned from an Arsenal victory in the season's traditional curtain-raiser.

GONE FOUR-EVER?

Is it curtains for Arsenal’s famous back four? Arsene Wenger looks certain to continue with the 3-4-2-1 system that served his team so well at the end of last season. Sunday merely emphasised why he must persist with playing three at the back.

BIG GUNNERS MISSING

Arsenal were without Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey on Sunday. It bodes well that they coped without four of their most influential players. And Shkodran Mustafi was not included. All five are surely certain starters.

DANNY LOOKING WEL

Danny Welbeck looks refreshed, recharged and ready to go. The forward’s career has been blighted by injury but he appears fully fit and produced a promising display at Wembley. England manager Gareth Southgate will be pleased.

SIGN OF THE TIMES

Antonio Conte’s answers to questions about the club’s transfer policy were indicative of his dour mood. Youngsters Charly Musonda, Jeremie Boga and Kyle Scott were all on the bench at Wembley so they need bodies through the door. Quick.

TRUST WILLIAN!

Willian can count himself unlucky to have been booked for diving in the first half. It looked as though the Brazilian threw himself to the floor under pressure from Hector Bellerin. But replays showed he was clipped before accidentally tripping himself.

WAIT FOR IT, ALVARO

Record signing Alvaro Morata was left on the bench as Michy Batshuayi started on Sunday. No doubt Morata will be Conte’s first-choice striker but you wonder if the manager believes the Spaniard is quite ready to be unleashed on the Premier League.
