Girona, who are part owned by Pep Guardiola's brother Pere and are in partnership with Manchester City, want Muniesa for the season with view to making the deal permanent should they stay up.

Girona are due to play City in a friendly following their Premier League opener against Brighton and have already signed five City players on loan.

Mahrez still on Roma's radar

Riyad Mahrez could still quit Leicester City for Roma this summer, according to the Italian side's sporting director Monchi.

The Foxes maintain the Algerian is not for sale and rejected a £32million offer from the Italian side, who continue to chase the winger.

Speaking at the unveiling of another new signing, Gregoire Defrel, Monchi said: 'I'm optimistic in life, by nature. Rome is doing everything possible to take the player.

'I am happy with the effort the club is making to take him. It is close to the limit. I do not think the club has often bid over €30m.

'If my memory does not deceive me, the latest offer would be the club's most expensive purchase in our history.

'We are, therefore, engaged and expect an answer. But it is true that we are working on other solutions.'

Chelsea continue to discuss a move for Danny Drinkwater

SIMON JONES: Chelsea are continuing to discuss a move for Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater.

The 27-year-old is keen to speak to the Premier League champions but Leicester are reluctant to sell a player who has been key to their progress in recent seasons.

Drinkwater is out of the season opener against Arsenal owing to a pulled thigh muscle but is expected to be fit within a fortnight.

Chelsea know he can form an effective partnership alongside former teammate N'Golo Kante and Drinkwater has the added bonus of being homegrown.

Apart from a holding midfielder, Antonio Conte is looking for at least one wing-back, an attacking midfielder and another forward.

Everton's Ross Barkley, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of Arsenal, Inter's Antonio Candreva and Renato Sanches at Bayern Munich have been discussed for the other midfield role while Swansea's Fernando Llorente remains a target for the attack. PSG's Serge Aurier is the latest wing-back to be mentioned.

Danny Drinkwater has been ruled out of Leicester's match against Arsenal on Friday night

Sanchez should see out Arsenal deal with 'dignity and respect' - Keown

Alexis Sanchez should see out his Arsenal contract with 'dignity and respect' according to former Gunners favourite Martin Keown.

The Chilean forward has one more season on his current deal and looks set to stay after manager Arsene Wenger stood firm in the face of relentless transfer speculation this summer.

The club risk losing the 28-year-old for free at the end of his deal and need to have Sanchez at his very best in 2017/18

Concerns were raised when he posted a message of social media shortly before pre-season training declaring himself 'sick' and, although he has since resumed work at Arsenal's London Colney base, he did not feature in Sunday's Community Shield win over Chelsea.

Keown does not expect commitment to be an issue, though.

'I don't think Sanchez is the kind of player to shut up shop,' the former England defender said at the FA and McDonald's Community Awards.

'Wenger will be relying on the fact he's someone who loves playing football and giving his all. They can work something out because he's certainly made his mark at the club and been successful, so if he's going to go he should do it in a dignified way.

'He signed a contract in good faith and - while he could probably move and earn a lot more money at another club - sometimes it's about carrying on with dignity and respect and finishing the job. That's what he should do at Arsenal.

'Wenger is probably hoping he can somehow win the Premier League and keep Sanchez, meet his needs from a trophy point of view and find some way to match his contract demands - but I don't see that happening.'

PETE JENSON: Real Madrid have a way of getting rid of players they don't want. Just as you get the tap on the shoulder when they want you, you also get the tap on the shoulder when they don't.

Gareth Bale has not had the tap on the shoulder yet and those closest to the player repeated to Sportsmail on Tuesday morning that they don't believe it is something that is going to happen any time soon.

They say Madrid are happy with Bale. The president broke the transfer record to sign him – even though he had to keep it from Cristiano Ronaldo so as not to upset him – and he has no plans to let him leave.

The talented playmaker joined Liverpool from West Bromwich Albion's academy at 14 and became the first player of Indian heritage to sign a professional contract for the Anfield club in 2015.

Jurgen Klopp rates Dhanda highly after promoting him to train with the first team squad this year following a recommendation from assistant coach Pep Lijnders.

Klopp said: 'Probably we are the only club with an Indian player in the squad. Yan Dhanda is a very good player and hopefully he can come through.'

Liverpool are still assessing their squad going into the season but may be reluctant to let the 18-year-old Dhanda go out on loan for the season as he is out of contract next summer.

The Birmingham-born youngster is keen to play more competitive football but hopes to convince Klopp he can make a breakthrough at Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers' hopes of persuading Patrick Roberts to come back to Celtic for a second spell were given a major boost after the player intimated that the Scottish champions are now his preferred choice.

Ahead of their Champions League play-off with Astana, Rodgers had suggested that he hoped to bring the 20-year-old Manchester City player back to Glasgow on either another long-term loan or a permanent basis.

His chances of doing so had looked increasingly remote after it emerged that free-spending Ligue 1 side Nice were primed to table a deal of their own to take the player to the Cote D’Azur initially on a one-year loan.
