Graeme Souness believes there could be a player revolt at Tottenham Hotspur next summer if the club fail to make another serious title bid this season.

Spurs have finished third and second in the last two years, but there are fears that their temporary move to Wembley - where they won just one of five games last term - could stunt their progress.

A lack of signings is also a concern for Tottenham, who strengthened rivals Manchester City last month by selling them Kyle Walker for £54million.

Walker is now earning £130,000 per week at City, twice as much as fellow full back Danny Rose is on at Spurs.

Rose recently hinted in a newspaper interview that Tottenham's tight pay structure could eventually force him to leave the club.

And former Spurs midfielder Souness fears Rose may not be the only player who feels this way.

Asked on Sky Sports if the Rose interview has given Spurs a big problem, Souness replied: ‘Certainly long term. Whether it affects them short term, we will have to wait and see, but long term certainly, yes.

‘Imagine this scenario... this season Tottenham don’t do well – and it would appear there is a mental block with some players at Wembley – so they don’t have a year anything like the last two years. Come the end of the season, does Dele Alli, or the other big players, still want to be there?'

Souness added: ‘It’s not like they are paying 10 or 20 per cent less wages than other teams. They’re a good 50 to 100 per cent less.

‘There are some teams below them paying their players 100 per cent more than the big players at Tottenham are on.

‘If they don’t have a great year and they are not challenging, are those players going to want to hang around? I’m not so sure.

‘If I was a big player getting paid less than somebody I feel I’m better than, I’m knocking on the manager’s door to say: “If you’re not going to give it to me, I’m off.”’
