Jose Mourinho shows his professional relationships at Manchester United run far deeper than as he spent his day off strolling around the city centre with assistant coach Ricardo Formosinho.

Following an impressive 4-0 demolition of West Ham in the opening Premier League weekend, Mourinho and the rest of his United squad were given Monday off to recuperate and reflect.

And the Portuguese opted against returning to his family home in London, instead spending the day discussing business with Formosinho, who worked with him at Porto and Real Madrid before joining him at Old Trafford last summer.

In keeping with Manchester United's main kit sponsor, Mourinho donned an adidas jacket and trainers as he seamlessly blended into the public with few appearing to notice the pair walking past. 

Mourinho later took to Instagram, posting a photograph of his wife Matilde Faria with the caption 'Feliz aniversario', meaning 'Happy birthday' in Portuguese. The fact that he could only post a picture of a photograph of his wife suggests they spent the occasion apart.

Faria chose to remain in London with their son and daughter following Mourinho's move to Manchester with the manager living in the luxurious Lowery Hotel and returning to the capital when possible.

United chiefs have always been unruffled by their manager residing inside a temporary home, claiming it does not impact on his job or suggest his stay will be short-term. There have, however, been rumblings that his personal life has suffered as a result.

The constant presence of paparazzi outside as well as problems with the hotel's WiFi caused issues last year, but he has opted to stay at the five-star resort instead of seeking more permanent accommodation.
