Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson to undergo a medical at Everton after clubs agree £45m fee

  • Everton and Swansea have agreed a £45m fee for transfer of Gylfi Sigurdsson
  • The Iceland midfielder will have a medical at the Merseyside club on Wednesday
  • Ronald Koeman's side will pay an initial fee of £40m and two £2.5m add-ons

Gylfi Sigurdsson will sign for Everton on Wednesday after they finally agreed a club-record £45million fee with Swansea City.

The Iceland international travelled up to Merseyside on Tuesday night ahead of a medical on Wednesday when he is poised to end a transfer saga that has rumbled on for over 12 months by signing a five-year contract worth over £100,000 a week.

Sigurdsson has maintained a dignified silence throughout — though privately has told Swansea manager Paul Clement on a number of occasions this summer that he wished to leave once Everton made their interest official.

Leicester City also made a £40m offer but Sigurdsson had his heart set on a move to Goodison Park.

He refused to travel to the USA for Swansea's pre-season tour and missed their friendly with Birmingham after declaring he was not in the right frame of mind.

Sigurdsson scored nine goals and created 13 more last season, and has been named Swansea's player of the year in each of the previous two seasons.

Though Swansea had publicly declared they wanted £50million for him, discussions had centred around the £40m mark with two proposals rejected before Tuesday's breakthrough.

Sigurdsson is expected to be unveiled to the Goodison Park crowd ahead of Thursday's Europa League tie with Hajduk Split.

Sigurdsson will become Everton's record signing, beating the £31.8m they paid Chelsea for striker Romelu Lukaku in 2014. They have enjoyed a productive transfer window, re-signing Wayne Rooney from Manchester United and spending a potential £30m each on centre back Michael Keane and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Midfielder Davy Klaassen also arrived from Ajax for £23.6m and striker Sandro Ramirez from Malaga for £5.2m.

Sigurdsson's arrival also paved the way for Gareth Barry's departure. The 36-year-old joined West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday for £1m and has agreed a one-year deal with the option of a further year.

Swansea will now concentrate on rebuilding their squad with the funds.

Manchester City striker Wilfried Bony is considered a priority as is West Bromwich Albion's Nacer Chadli.

Swansea have already had a £10m bid rejected for Bony with City wanting £13m while Albion want over £25m for Belgium international Chadli.
