Arsene Wenger has backed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to become one of England's key men after insisting the midfielder will not be sold this summer.

Chelsea are determined to land Oxlade-Chamberlain and have already had a £25million offer rejected.

The 23-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his deal meaning he can leave for nothing next summer.

But despite the prospect of losing Oxlade-Chamberlain for free, Wenger insists the former Southampton man is going nowhere.


And Wenger believes the versatile midfielder will become a stand-out performer for the England national team.

'Yes, he is staying here. Why? Personally, because I rate him highly and he's one of the players who is on his way up,' said Wenger.

'In the last year, he has made huge progress and personally I want him to stay here for a long time.

'I'm convinced he will be the English player that everybody will look at in the next two years at the end of the season.'
