Sky Sports Italia report Mustafi is keen to return to Italy, while Arsene Wenger was vague when quizzed about the player on Thursday.

He told a pre-match press conference: 'It's very difficult for me to talk about individual cases.'

Arsenal have four recognised centre backs in their first team squad - Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Rob Holding and Calum Chambers - although Wenger has this season preferred to play with a back three.

Inter Milan have been linked with a number of central defenders this summer, including Manchester City's Eliaquim Mangala.

However they appear have agreed a loan for Mustafi, although Arsenal would like an obligation for Inter to buy him permanently for as close to £35m as possible.
