Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has apologised to fans after their 4-0 humiliation by Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Welsh midfielder played the first 45 minutes in the rout as Arsene Wenger's hapless team were taken apart by Jurgen Klopp's far hungrier team - as a number of disgusted fans walked out during the second half.

With pressure again building on the long-serving Frenchman after he signed a two-year contract extension in May - to the annoyance of many who want him to resign - Ramsey issued a mea culpa to unhappy Arsenal supporters.

Speaking to the club's official website the 26-year-old, who made his 300th appearance for the North Londoners during the game, said: 'We’re very disappointed with the way we performed but we have to accept it.

'We’re sorry to the fans that came up - it’s not good enough and we have to do something about it.

'That wasn’t good enough. Liverpool showed what it’s going to have to take to compete for the Premier League and we’re going to have to do something about it if we’re going to do that.'

When Wenger was asked after the game what he thought was wrong with his side he admitted 'everything' before walking out of his press conference barely 120 seconds after it started.

The defeat is Wenger's second in two games after a 1-0 loss at Stoke City but when Ramsey was asked what the team could do to improve the situation, he failed to provide any convincing answers.

He added: 'I don’t know, we’ll have to review it and hopefully move on.

'No I don’t think there were any positives. We’re going to have to change something if we’re to compete this year.

'Most of the squad go away now, so when we get back we’ll have to review that and hopefully we can move on and sort it out.'

Arsenal's next match after the forthcoming international break is against Eddie Howe's Bournemouth at the Emirates on Saturday, September 9, followed by a daunting trip to reigning champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, September 17.
