After his move was confirmed on Tuesday, Wimmer told the club's website: 'I had some really good conversations with the manager, Mark Hughes, and they were important for me.

'He is a very good manager and I like the way he approaches the game, his style of play suits the way I like to play too - he likes his defenders to be able to play out with the ball.

'I am just so happy to be at Stoke now because I really wanted to come here, to a club with such big tradition, so I feel really good and am very excited about meeting up with everybody and getting ready for the matches ahead.'

Wimmer has become the seventh summer signing for Hughes, who is also hopeful of bringing in a wing-back and a central midfielder ahead of Thursday night's transfer deadline.

Wimmer, who signed a five-year deal at Tottenham in 2015 following his £4.3million arrival from Cologne, made just five appearances in the Premier League last season for Mauricio Pochettino's side.

The defender will be hoping to play a part for his new team against Manchester United in the Premier League at the bet365 Stadium following the international break.

West Brom, who drew 1-1 with Stoke on Sunday, had also expressed an interest in Wimmer but Baggies boss Tony Pulis has turned his attentions elsewhere.
