BBC Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer has plate inserted into broken wrist as he undergoes surgery after bike accident

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has had surgery to have a plate inserted into his broken wrist.

The 47-year-old fell off his bike during a cycling holiday in Portugal earlier this month but is now back in England, where he has been treated.

Match of the Day pundit Shearer took to Instagram on Wednesday morning to share X-ray pictures with his 184,000 followers.

He wrote: 'Nice new wrist!!!' He accompanied another post with the words: 'Plate in wrist'

He accompanied the scan images with the caption: 'Nice new wrist!!!'


The Premier League's all-time record goalscorer also posted a photo of himself in a hospital bed with a large piece of blue foam protecting his right arm.

He wrote: 'Op done. Plate in wrist. No golf tomorrow!' 

Shearer had used Instagram to break the news of his injury too.

On August 21 he shared a gruesome photo of his cut hand and the message: 'Ouch! Bit of a fall off the bike this morning.

'Waiting for results of X-rays on wrist. Good job I was wearing my helmet #bikesafe'.

Despite his injury, BBC Sport pundit Shearer appeared on Saturday night's Match of the Day show, wearing a black plaster on his wrist.
