'I think he's already become a fantastic player, and that's the reason why we spent £35million on him,' Gerrard said.

'I think he definitely strengthens the group and the team. He's English, he's 24, he's just coming into his peak years. He's a very quick and exciting player.

'He seems as if he wasn't happy at Arsenal, so now hopefully he can settle down, give the best years of his career at Liverpool Football Club. But I think he's a very, very positive signing,' Gerrard added.

Oxlade-Chamberlain's final game for the Gunners came against his new employers, after being part of the Arsenal team who were soundly beaten at Anfield.

The 24-year-old started the match in which Arsenal were overcome with an emphatic 4-0 scoreline.

Previously Oxlade-Chamberlain had admitted to always wanting to be Gerrard while growing up, after making an admission following last season's FA Cup final.

Speaking about his performance after Arsenal lifted the trophy, he said: 'But (in) the centre-mid role… I’ve always wanted to be Steven Gerrard.'

Oxlade-Chamberlain is away with England on international duty, though could be in line to make his Liverpool debut against Manchester City when the Premier League returns.
