'He is an inspirational leader, someone who has had success at this level in the recent past and we think he is a very good fit here,' said Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas.

'We have sought a lot of advice and have spoken to and taken on board feedback from people who have worked with Jimmy before and those who have played against his teams.

'He is a manager who injects confidence and belief into his players, and someone who we think can begin to unlock the potential of what we believe is a good squad we have here.'

The former Dutch international took Burton to the top of League One before vacating his position for Loftus Road, with Nigel Clough returning to the Pirelli Stadium, winning promotion and keeping the Brewers in the Championship in their first season at that level.

He led the Hoops to a 12th-place finish in the second tier before being fired just three months into his first full season, with his side sitting 17th.

In total he took charge of 47 games at QPR, winning just 13 with a win percentage of 27.7 per cent.
