Liverpool have an array of options with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's arrival - but which position will he thrive in under Jurgen Klopp's guidance?

  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could make his Liverpool debut at Manchester City
  • His versatility has led to queries over where he specifically fits with Jurgen Klopp
  • He provides an alternative in midfield and also in wide attacking positions

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has only been a Liverpool player for a week but already there is speculation around exactly where he fits into Jurgen Klopp's starting line-up.

The England midfielder has acknowledged that he has work to do before he becomes synonymous with a specific position at Anfield.

'I've spoken about this for about six years - my whole career - where I'm going to be playing or where I'd like to play,' Oxlade-Chamberlain said.

'I just say I'd like to be an attacking midfielder. I've spoke to the manager about this, there's going to be a lot of positions (available) in this team: up-front, because the wingers play a bit more inside, or the midfield.'

Liverpool have seven matches in 24 games until the next international break, so rotation will be key to maintaining the high-octane pressing game Klopp oversees. With that in mind, Sportsmail assesses where Oxlade-Chamberlain can break into Liverpool's squad.

OPTION 1: 4-3-3

In the five games Liverpool have played so far, Klopp's favoured formation has been 4-3-3.

Oxlade-Chamberlain will have to have made a huge impression in training to dislodge any of the midfield three who played against Arsenal and start at Manchester City on Saturday. But as the games begin to pile up, he will have plenty of opportunities to cement a place in the starting eleven.

As captain, Jordan Henderson is naturally most secure in midfield. If Emre Can's dynamic start continues, he will be difficult to dislodge too so Georginio Wijnaldum could find his place at risk to the England midfielder, despite a string of strong displays of his own.

If he is to be thrown into the starting line-up for Saturday's early Premier League match against Pep Guardiola's men, it is the Dutchman who could unfortunately find himself on the bench.

OPTION 2: 4-2-3-1

With Philippe Coutinho set to be reintroduced to the Liverpool fold, Klopp will have a number of options to reshape his attack if and when he rotates to avoid players feeling fatigued.

Henderson and Wijnaldum can provide more of a disciplined midfield axis for four attackers. Oxlade-Chamberlain's pace allows Klopp another alternative to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane on the flanks.

He and Mane or Salah could flank Coutinho in the centre of an advanced midfield three.

Roberto Firmino may not be as ruthless in front of goal as Daniel Sturridge, but his positional play and pressing makes him invaluable to Klopp's setup and the first choice to lead the attacking line.
