Watford defender Daryl Janmaat believes the Hornets can threaten the big guns after Southampton crushing

Daryl Janmaat is confident Watford can maintain their flying start to the Premier League season.

The Hornets are up to fourth after goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Janmaat sank Southampton 2-0 at St Mary's and preserving their unbeaten start to the season. 

Watford host joint-leaders Manchester City next weekend and defender Janmaat sees the clash as another chance to show they mean business this term.

The 28-year-old scored in Watford's 2-0 win over Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday

'We're unbeaten with eight points from four games so it's a fantastic start to the season,' Janmaat said. 

'We have got to continue like this and on Saturday we have Manchester City at home and a great opportunity to try to stay up with them.

'We are playing with a lot of confidence at the moment. We have a good team, some good signings, a lot of strength in the team and pace up front.

'I think we can threaten a lot of teams with the way we are playing and we can have a great season.'

French midfielder Doucoure broke the deadlock when he pounced from the edge of the area seven minutes before half-time.

Janmaat settled the match when he rifled in the second from 25 yards just five minutes after coming on as a substitute.

It was a debut to forget for Southampton's new Dutch centre-back Wesley Hoedt.

Abdoulaye Doucoure also scored to preserve the Hornets' unbeaten start to the season 

'Unfortunately it was a bad start for all of us,' he told the Saints website.

'I think we lost too many second balls. At that point they won the game and I think that is where it went wrong for us.

'We didn't concede that much, only two shots on goal, but we need to do much better and improve. That's the only thing we can do now. Stick together and improve.'
