Danny Ings suffers fresh injury worry after early withdrawal in comeback for Liverpool U23s... but club say first-half exit was 'just a precaution'

  • Striker Danny Ings started his latest injury comeback with Liverpool Under 23s
  • Ings was taken off during the first half after taking some heavy challenges
  • Under 23s boss Neil Critchley said the substitution was a precautionary move
  • Yan Danda, who replaced Ings, scored the only goal against Manchester City

Danny Ings' early withdrawal during his latest comeback in a Liverpool shirt was 'just a precaution', according to the club.

Making his return to competitive action with the Under 23s, Ings was replaced 10 minutes before half-time during Liverpool's 1-0 Premier League 2 win against Manchester City at Prenton Park on Sunday.

Ings, 25, had gone down under a couple of tough challenges and at one point crashed into the advertising hoardings.

The striker looked to have shaken those off but immediately after hitting a volley over the bar in the 32nd minute, he signalled to bench that he could not continue.

Ings was able to stay on the pitch while he waited for the ball to go dead but was replaced by Yan Dhanda, who scored the match-winner. The lack of immediate need for treatment provides hope the injury is not too severe.

Ings' substitution was 'just a precaution' according to Under 23 boss Neil Critchley.

'It's more a precaution than anything,' Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com.'We'll just look after him and assess him, but I'm sure he'll be fine.'

The setback is latest Ings has suffered since his move to Anfield in 2015. He has missed the majority of the last two years with knee problems after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in training in Jurgen Klopp's first week in charge.

Ings did return last season but sustained another injury in an EFL Cup tie against Spurs.

Since then, it has been 11 months since he pulled on a Liverpool shirt, and the Anfield faithful will surely be growing concerned about whether he will ever appear in Jurgen Klopp's first team again.

There were hopes that he would make his return in the upcoming EFL Cup match against Leicester, but that may now be in jeopardy.
