Arsenal's win over Bournemouth will pave over cracks but Arsene Wenger remains one game away from choas

  • Arsenal put in a classy display to thump Bournemouth 3-0 at home on Saturday
  • Arsene Wenger tinkered with his side and made some alterations which paid off
  • But the victory at the Emirates Stadium only disguises their plentiful issues
  • The Arsenal boss is still only one unsatisfactory result away from revolt
  • And their key players Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are still yet to pen new deals
  • If Arsenal had lost on Saturday it would have been their worst start for 35 years

At the Emirates Stadium Arsenal played smooth, syrupy attacking football, oozing quality. The Emirates crowd applauded their players at the final whistle and there were only a few boos and jeers for wantaway forward Alexis Sanchez when he came on in the 75th minute, although they were already three ahead against Bournemouth by then. Arsenal are back.

Problems solved from the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool before the international break, a second Premier League loss in three. Manager Arsene Wenger made the right decisions: recalling £46.5million signing Alexandre Lacazette, who scored, and sticking with Danny Welbeck, who usually has only a modest goal return but who scored twice.

'The performance was disciplined, serious and committed and going forward we created a lot through the flanks,' Wenger said in the aftermath. 'Yes, it is difficult to find a good performance at Liverpool, but it is difficult to find a bad performance today.'

True; only, this was against Bournemouth, for a start, and a Bournemouth side who did not land a shot accurately on Petr Cech's goal until five minutes from time in a performance manager Eddie Howe described as 'up there' with the worst he had witnessed in his seven years at the club. A Bournemouth team on zero points and who will be relegated if something does not drastically change.

The same supporters who were on their feet at the end were an early Bournemouth goal, or a shoddy Arsenal performance, or anything but the display they were treated to, away from home revolt.

Defeat would have meant Arsenal's worst league start in 35 years and Wenger would have deserved everything he got. Even the 'Wenger In' camp have started to become the 'Wenger Not So Sure' camp. This result was more like a cheap, smooth gloss slathered by Wenger over their plentiful issues that will begin to dry and crack in the coming weeks.

Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are not suddenly going to pen new contracts on the back of a home victory against Bournemouth. They are still in the Europa League, a competition whose punishing Thursday-Sunday schedule has been to the detriment of many teams.

'At least it is a new experience for us,' Wenger said. 'We will take it seriously but the priority is to focus on the Premier League and combining the two and then in December we will see, but at least we want to qualify for the next round.

'Thursday to Sunday morning is short so yes — I have to think about that. But we have to win at home and you know how it is when you don't win at home.'

But the Alexis Sanchez issue is on-going and it doesn't appear as if it will be resolved soon

Wenger was alluding to the propensity for Arsenal's fans to turn on the team quickly at the Emirates, where they host Cologne at home on Thursday who have lost all three of their Bundesliga matches this season so should prove a similar test to Bournemouth.

Then they travel to Chelsea on the Sunday. 'I don't like it when you need to respond and you always needing a good response to a bad result because you should not have bad results in the first place,' Cech, who kept his first clean sheet of the season, said.

'I'm happy with the response but I hope it's the last time we have to do that because I hope from now on we actually play at this level in every game because in this league if you are a fraction off the level then you can get easily beaten like we were at Liverpool.'

At the moment Arsenal feel like one bad result away from chaos every match.
