Frank Lampard says Liverpool can beat 'any team in the world' at their best but warns defensive errors must be cut out

Frank Lampard believes Liverpool have the firepower capable of beating any team of the world, but warns they must cut out 'basic mistakes'. 

Liverpool were held 2-2 at home by Sevilla in their Champions League opener having led and missed a penalty before the break.

Jurgen Klopp's side had fought back after conceding an early goal when Dejan Lovren slipped when going to clear a cross.

However, Lampard warned they must cut out 'basic mistakes' after drawing 2-2 with Sevilla

And while Liverpool's response was breathtaking Lampard believes their failures at the back are preventing them from turning performances into points. 

'We saw both sides of Liverpool, lots of good stuff – fast play, entertaining stuff to watch,' Lampard told BT Sport after the match.

'When it clicks they can beat any team in the world, but if they’re going to make the basic mistakes they can make then you can lose points in a game you’re in a fantastic position to win.'

Fellow pundit Rio Ferdinand echoed the sentiments of his former England colleague, spelling out that the the Reds must do everything to address their defensive flaws.

The former Manchester United defender also picked out the penalty miss as they key moment of the game.

Rio Ferdinand said Liverpool were undone by their own inadequacies at Anfield 

Roberto Firmino, who missed from the spot before the break, looked distraught at the full-time whistle, and Ferdinand admitted it was a huge turning point.  

'I thought first half they were fantastic going forward. You always come to expect that from this Klopp side; fast, direct,' he said.

'But they were undone by their own inadequacies at the back. We spoke before the game about how they switch off and how their first instinct isn’t too defend and it was proved today.

'The penalty was the defining factor. If he scores that it’s game over, they win it 3-1. As it was, it wasn’t to be.'
