Bournemouth 2-1 Brighton, Premier League RESULT: Jermain Defoe scores first goal for Cherries to take the lead

Referee Craig Pawson blows for full-time. Bournemouth have a much needed Premier League victory. Ibe the star man for the Cherries. Two assists for him and Defoe is also off the mark for his new club. Eddie Howe breathes a sigh of relief.

90min+4: Brighton have a late free-kick. Goalkeeper Ryan takes it but Bournemouth win back possession. Arter eventually clears the ball and tells Ibe to chase. 

90min+2: Bournemouth make their last change. Josh King is replaced by Dan Gosling.

90min: Bournemouth corner after Rosenior gets back to tackle Afobe. Played short to King who holds play up before losing possession. Arter is then caught a little late by Propper. Free-kick to the Cherries midway in the Brighton half. Arter advances forward before playing the ball to King who is brought down outside the Brighton area by Dunk. Free-kick immediately outside the Seagulls box. Ibe takes and fizzes an effort just wide.

86min: Brighton corner. March takes but it goes all the way through to Liam Rosenior who can't keep his right-footed shot down. 

82min: Bournemouth have this under control. They retaining possession well and aren't giving Brighton a sniff. The Seagulls need something special now if they're going to take a point away from this one.

79min: Bournemouth free-kick on the left side. Surman dummies and Ibe delivers before the ball is played out for a Cherries corner. The ball comes in but Brighton clear the danger.

77min: Bournemouth make their second change. Benik Afobe replaces Jermain Defoe, who walks off to a standing ovation from the crowd at the Vitality Stadium.

76min: Brighton make two changes. Knockaert and Gross off for Murray and Izquierdo.

It had to be him. Eddie Howe's summer signing delivers his first goal for the club. Jordan Ibe, who came on as a sub just under 10 minutes ago, has made a great impact. Backheel assist for Surman before setting up Defoe from close range for the veteran striker to get his first goal of the season. Deserved.

71min: Bournemouth now committing more numbers forward as Brighton retreat into their own half. Daniels given plenty of time on the left before the ball eventually reaches Jordan Ibe who shoots but Dunk, the Brighton captain, is able to deflect it over the bar for a Cherries corner. Meanwhile, Gross is down on the ground receiving treatment after a coming together with Ake.

Massive goal for the Cherries. Surman did all of that himself. He controlled the ball in the Brighton penalty area after Ibe's backheel, turned Dunk who had been doing a great job in central defence before placing a left-footed effort past Ryan. Surman's first goal in the Premier League and an important one.

65min: First change of the night for Bournemouth. Jordan Ibe replaces Ryan Fraser on the right wing. 

63min: Eddie Howe claps his hands and tries to encourage his players. They are strong on the counter attack but sloppy passes have cost them during this second half. Brighton really haven't been troubled since they took the lead.

59min: 'To the Albion 1-0, to the Albion 1-0,' the Brighton fans sing. They are heading for their second successive Premier League victory. Their side is playing with confidence now. March, the goalscorer, is moving into excellent positions as the Cherries take up a deeper defensive line.

Excellent stuff from Brighton. The Seagulls fans chant Solly March's name and rightly so. A delightful Gross cross is met by March who heads past Begovic. Brighton much more willing to attack during this second half. Alarm bells for Eddie Howe.

How is Harry Arter still on the pitch? His confidence looks shot, he keeps giving the ball away. He is in the team because of his reliability — he has been anything but this evening.

53min: The Cherries now have a corner. It's played short to Daniels who wins another corner. This time it's swung into the Brighton box but Pugh shoots wide as the ball eventually falls to him.

52min: Brighton have a corner. Solly March breaks down the left before Smith intercepts. Off the line by Surman after Duffy's header appeared to be going in. A second corner comes in and Stephens this time gets a head on it but the ball bounces off the underside of the Bournemouth crossbar and goes out 

49min: Important to remind you that Brighton haven't beaten Bournemouth in their last six meetings. The Seagulls don't look like changing that. Hughton's side remains deep in their own half and don't appear too interested in taking any risks.

Brighton get us started for the second half.

This feels like two Championship teams playing each other. There’s not cutting edge, no-one looks like making anything happen. The stadium announcer just revealed a supporter has traveled from Vancouver for the match. I feel for them.

Bournemouth the stronger side but Brighton have defended well. Propper and Stephens, the two midfielders in front of the back four, have done brilliantly for Hughton's side by breaking up and recycling play. Bournemouth have lacked quality in their final ball despite some impressive build-up play from Daniels and Fraser.

44min: Arter's misplaced pass to Daniels goes out for a Brighton throw in. A frustrating first half for Bournemouth. 

41min: 'Eddie Howe's barmy army,' rings out round the Vitality Stadium. No doubting that the Cherries supporters still back their manager. They've been the better side here but haven't made their possession and grip on the game tell.

37min: Pugh the creator again but again the final product is lacking for Bournemouth as Fraser's tame shot eventually reaches Ryan in the Brighton goal. Cherries lacking invention as Chris Hughton's are lapping every attack up.

33min: Fraser doing all he can on the right for Bournemouth. Shane Duffy, who has been Brighton's weak link so far, twice clears. The Cherries are really going for this as we near half-time. 

31min: First chance of the night from Defoe. Pugh played it to him and the striker swivelled before lashing a right-footed effort which narrowly misses the left post of the Brighton goal. Goalkeeper Ryan was beaten.

29min: Propper breaks forward after Arter's misplaced pass. He gets as far as the edge of the Bournemouth area and tries to chip Begovic but his effort goes over. 

27min: Gone a little flat. Bournemouth still maintaining possession percentage of plus 60. Brighton sitting deep and doing well to stop the Cherries penetrating through the centre of the pitch. Stephens in particular has done well to break up play before trying to set Knockaert on his way up the pitch.

21min: Daniels does excellently on the left wing before cutting inside and playing the ball to Pugh but the midfielder rushes his shot and blazes over Ryan's crossbar. A good chance for Bournemouth from inside the Brighton box.

18min: Francis nearly concedes possession after dwelling on the ball a little too long. The Cherries are trying hard to maintain their early game intensity but they are struggling somewhat. Fortunately for them Brighton's plan seems to be about keeping players in their own half rather than breaking forward at any given moment.

15min: Duffy makes the mistake as King nearly punishes Brighton. Duffy appears a little lethargic. There is a suggestion that he may have picked up an injury. He's certainly not looked with it so far during this first half.

13min: Solly March making Brighton tick in the centre of midfield. Very good close control and vision. He just needs one of his team-mates to gamble a little bit and make a run forward.

11min: Harry Arter returns the favour down the other end. He shoots with his left-foot but his effort, which was never on target, goes out for a goal kick.

9min: Knockaert allowed too much room after beating Daniels with ease but then wastes a chance to slip March in by shooting left-footed outside the Bournemouth area which rolls past Begovic's left post.

8min: Fraser again charges down the right wing. March barely moved as the midfielder made his way forward. Thankfully Suttner was switched on and won the ball cleanly with a strong sliding tackle.

5min: Bournemouth playing short passes as they look to retain possession. Fraser and Arter both impressing but Howe's side are struggling to get the ball into the Brighton penalty area.

2min: Ryan Fraser on the right side for Bournemouth storms down the right wing, skipping past Suttner but is eventually stopped in his tracks. High tempo stuff from the Cherries.

1min: Fast start by Bournemouth. Charlie Daniels races down the left but his low cross is easily cleared. Brighton showing they are alert in the opening stages.

Bournemouth's Jermain Defoe gets the ball rolling on the south coast.

The players are out of the tunnel and on the pitch... 

Bournemouth have only five wins in the Premier League in 2017. It's a horrible return. Jermain Defoe could go a long way to helping the Cherries stop the rot - he's the man Eddie Howe will be looking towards for help tonight.

Defoe tells Sky Sports: 'I'm enjoying it... results have not been good but there's so much more to come from the team. Really impressed with the manager and what he we wants to do.'

It's a clash between two teams who not that long ago were playing lower league football.

Bournemouth desperately need to get off the mark. Manager Eddie Howe has already spoken about how disappointed he has been with his players.
