Manchester City's lethal pair Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero are too hot to handle... defences must adapt quickly

  • Pep Guardiola has found a way of playing both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus
  • Pair have combined to devastating effect scoring nine goals between them
  • Defenders will have to adapt quickly from playing up against one to stop them

Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus are so effective because they are exploiting the fact that central defenders are used to playing against one centre forward, not two.

Last season, Manchester City were guilty of not putting away their chances.

With Aguero on his own up front, defenders could crowd him out and make him rush his shots. Pep Guardiola has recognised this and has deployed two strikers to pin the centre halves.

When Kevin De Bruyne gets into the pockets of space behind the midfield, a central defender has to choose whether to close down the Belgian or stick with his striker.

It means that Aguero and Jesus have more time and space when De Bruyne and David Silva put them through. When I played, two up front was the norm.

The opposition might put someone good in the air up against me and another striker with a bit of pace against Tony Adams. You learned how to deal with the flick-ons, the movements and partnerships that would develop between two strikers.

Aguero and Jesus have already scored nine goals in the Premier League between them this season. Central defenders will have to adapt quickly to stop them.
