Fellaini started his first game of the season against former club Everton on Sunday and is highly regarded by manager Jose Mourinho.
However, he is in the final year of his contract and turns 30 in November.
United's policy has been to offer one year rolling contracts to players over 30 and Fellaini would ideally want a longer deal.
He has been courted by clubs from Italy and Turkey and is free to talk to foreign clubs from January.
