From winding up Manchester City team-mates to banter with the police over his Nandos parking fine: How Benjamin Mendy became football's new king of social media

  • Benjamin Mendy has made a splash since he arrived at Man City for £52million
  • He is a regular user of social media and doesn't hold back when posting online
  • Fans have taken him to their hearts and so have City players because of his jokes

When Manchester City splashed an eye-watering £52million to sign Benjamin Mendy in the summer, they didn't just get a full-back who can rampage up and down the wing.

They didn't just become the side to have sent their summer spending soaring past £200million thanks to a record fee for a defender, either.

What they did get, thrown in for free alongside all of that, was a squad member who seems to enjoy himself quite a lot away from the pitch.

Mendy has been something of a social media revelation since arriving at City, regularly engaging with fans while making them laugh at the same time.

From the moment he declared that 'Manchester has changed' after his arrival was announced in July, there has rarely been a dull moment on his social feeds.

It was a slightly rocky start for the Frenchman, who got himself in hot water for tweeting 'bullet header' while watching Lewis Dunk score an own goal in his team's win over Brighton on the opening day of the season.

The tweet caught the eye of Steven Gerrard, who declared while working for BT Sport: 'I don't like to see that there's no need for it.'

You can't keep a good man down for too long however and after apologising for the tweet he went straight back to his keyboard and picked up where he left off.

Perhaps his finest moment came when he caught out by Sportsmail spies parking illegally when stopping off for a cheeky Nandos.

He took it in stride during a brilliant exchange with the Chicken chain, and then went viral after tweeting a picture of him celebrating City's late winner against Bournemouth near a police man with the caption: When you still haven't paid for that cheeky Nandos parking fine.'

Mendy also caused more than a few laughs when he posted a picture of himself in an ice chamber, and his ongoing battle with FIFA over his rating on their popular video game.

It's not just fans who have taken to him either, it turns out he's a big hit with the city players too.

His Instagram feed gives a clear sign that he is exactly the same in real life as he is on social - constantly dancing and singing - and it seems he's a big fan of the famous Toure song.

Around the training ground he's known as the life and soul of the party and his team-mates are certainly enamoured with him.

He declared himself and colleagues including Kyle Walker, Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling as 'The Shark Team' - and the group pop up regularly on each others' feeds.

Mendy and Walker in particular seem close and the former Spurs man didn't miss the chance to rip his mate after he was nutmegged during City's win over Feyenoord in the Champions League.

Although he's only played three Premier League games for City so far Mendy has made his mark on and off the pitch. But, let's leave the final word to him:
