Wayne Rooney was pictured being driven home from Everton training on Tuesday afternoon as he begins a two-year driving ban following his arrest late last month.

The former England striker admitted to drink driving at Stockport Magistrates Court on Monday and was handed the ban as well 100 hours of community service.

Rooney, who sat in the passenger's seat of a black Range Rover as he departed Finch Farm, could be rested for Wednesday's visit of Sunderland in the Carabao Cup.

The 31-year-old has endured a testing time on and off the pitch recently, with Ronald Koeman's men suffering their fourth successive defeat against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Rooney was welcomed back to United, the club he left earlier this summer, by the home fans at Old Trafford, but he left frustrated after missing two good chances to score against his former side.

He issued an apology on Monday after he was given a two-year ban for being almost three times the drink-drive limit when he was stopped at the wheel of a car with Laura Simpson, a woman he had met earlier in the Symposium nightclub in Wilmslow.

Rooney, whose marriage to wife Coleen is believed to under pressure, now faces having to be driven the 75-mile round trip to training and back, as well getting lifts to matches at Goodison Park and to his community service.

Everton are expected to fine Rooney £300,000 for his actions, which is the equivalent of two weeks' wages for the former Three Lions captain.

At Monday's hearing, Rooney's lawyer unsuccessfully argued for him to avoid a community order because he already does extensive charity work. However, the judge said he didn't believe a fine would be sufficient punishment..

Speaking about the incident on September 7, Everton boss Koeman revealed he was 'very disappointed' with the player he lured back to Merseyside in July.

'Obviously I am very disappointed by this situation regarding Wayne Rooney,' the Dutchman said ahead of the 3-0 defeat by Tottenham.

'We have spoken on Tuesday and the chairman Bill Kenwright spoke also to Wayne about this situation.
