Bournemouth 1-0 Brighton & Hove Albion: Super sub Josh King fires Eddie Howe's side into Carabao Cup fourth round with extra-time winner

  • The game went into extra-time after 90 minutes ended in a goalless stalemate
  • Substitute Josh King finally broke the deadlock in the first-half of extra-time
  • The Norwegian's close-range strike in the 99th minute proved to be the winner
  • His goal booked Bournemouth's place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup

If the roars that greeted Bournemouth's winning goal in this same fixture last Friday had the sense of a euphoric release, this time around the celebrations felt more like soothing relief.

True, it came later than hoped for, as Brighton's stubborn resistance held out until the ninth minute of extra-time but substitute Josh King's goal, which bobbled beyond the terrific goalkeeper Tim Krul, felt only a matter of time.

All of sudden, Eddie Howe's season bears a sunnier complexion.

The tensions that enveloped Bournemouth's modest home before last Friday's comeback victory over Brighton have now diffused. One goal down and staring down the barrel of a 5th straight Premier League defeat at the start of the season, Howe's feel-good story was beginning to unravel.

This match never going to stir the emotions but Howe will at least be pleased to build momentum.

He and his Brighton counterpart Chris Hughton clearly view this competition as a distraction rather than a priority and this was reflected in the combined nineteen changes that they made to their line-ups.

Thankfully, we live in lavish times and there was still the promise of plenty to enjoy. The absurd riches of the Premier League were on show as Brighton handed a first start to £13.5m record signing Jose Izquierdo and Bournemouth started £25m worth of attacking talent in Benik Afobe and Jordon Ibe. The Colombian winger Izquierdo was the first to threaten, as he flew jet-heeled down the left, cut inside and forced a fine save from Artur Boruc.

Brighton, who took the lead should have taken the lead 25 minutes in. The Czech midfielder Jiri Skalak drove a strike towards goal and Boruc fumbled it but the goalkeeper then recovered superbly to thwart Jamie Murphy.

The game then drifted rather feebly and it is perhaps unsurprising that the reserves of two sides who have scored a combined 8 Premier League goals this season did not serve up an exhibition of flowing football.

To Bournemouth's credit, they anticipated the lethargy that may surround the fixture and managed to sell out the ground with a generous pricing scheme. Adults paid £10 for entry while kids only £3.

Those supporters, however, faced extensive waits to enter the ground and the stadium only appeared to fill up around 15 minutes into the game. Bournemouth later released a statement to apologise and cited extra search times required for counter-terrorism measures as the reason for the delay.

Once they were in, Ibe was the man who offered most cause for cheer. He was instrumental in Bournemouth's comeback in the 2-1 win on Friday, as he produced two assists and impressed once more here.

It has not been straightforward for Ibe since the winger arrived on the south coast in a £15m deal from Liverpool. Indeed, he is still to even complete a full 90 minutes for this club in the Premier League and his two assists against Brighton on Friday were, remarkably, his first in Bournemouth colours.

His first Bournemouth goal nearly came on the brink of half time, as his rasping strike yielded a smart save from Tim Krul.

Immediately after half-time, the side traded blows. Bournemouth's breakthrough very nearly came when Benik Afobe's header rebounded to Junior Stanislas. The winger, however, somehow contrived to hit the frame of the goal from point blank range.

Brighton then had a glaring miss of their own, as Jamie Murphy capitalised on Steve Cook's error but his effort was weak when through on goal and Boruc stuck out a leg to poke the ball for a corner.

Within a couple of minutes, Stanislas was at it once more, as he met a pull-back in the penalty area and skewed his strike horribly over the bar.

King entered off the bench and his invention heightened the intensity of Bournemouth's once more, as Krul showcased his full repertoire of shot-stopping talents.

Eventually, he was beaten.
