Mauricio Pochettino has rejected Tim Sherwood’s claims that Harry Kane could walk out on Tottenham if they have another season without a trophy.

Sherwood gave Kane his debut at Spurs and said this week that ‘the only way they can keep him is to win something this year’.

The striker’s status among the world’s best was underlined by his inclusion in the FIFpro World XI shortlist on Wednesday, but Pochettino dismissed any suggestions that Kane would want to leave the club, saying: ‘Always people are talking about him winning trophies, that we have to win trophies for Harry to stay here with us.

‘But people recognise Harry's value. He is one of the best strikers playing for Tottenham when still we don't win any trophies. But I tell you always, Harry is a player who loves Tottenham and is going to stay here. He is looking forward to staying here a long time.

‘I respect every single opinion. And of course Tim has the right to speak about Tottenham and Harry. But that is a question more for Harry on what he wants to do.’

Kane is under contract at Tottenham until the summer of 2022 and continues to excel at the club. Pochettino highlighted his inclusion on the FIFpro shortlist as further evidence that he is world class.

He said: ‘He is the only English player. I have told you that Harry is one of the best strikers in the world and this is the confirmation. And how people around the world see Harry. This doesn't surprise me.

'I think we have other players that maybe deserve to be on the list but they are not. But I think Harry deserves it. For me, Harry is one of the best strikers in the world.’

Tottenham face West Ham on Saturday and Pochettino confirmed Ben Davies is set to return from an ankle injury, while Erik Lamela, Danny Rose and Victor Wanyama remain out.
