Diego Costa passed his Atletico Madrid medical and then watched his new team move to second in La Liga with an impressive 2-0 win over Sevilla ahead of their meeting with Chelsea on Wednesday.

Costa was not presented to supporters because the transfer is still to be officially completed and when asked if he could be presented before the Champions League game against his old club, Atletico coach Simeone said: 'We are very respectful of Chelsea.

'We are just delighted that a player of Costa's caliber wants to come here. The steps that still need to happen for the deal to be closed are not down to us.'

The 28-year-old returned to Atletico for £55million this week after a stand-off with Chelsea

Costa's Brazilian team-mate Luis Felipe, who also moved to Chelsea from Atletico and then went back to the Spanish club, added: 'It is an immense effort from the club to bring him. And it's an important step because he is one of the best three strikers in the world.

'He's won titles wherever he has gone and I'm very proud that he has come back and that he chose to return to Atletico ahead of the many clubs he could have gone to this summer.'

Costa refused to return to Chelsea after receiving a text message that he was not in the club's plans from coach Antonio Conte. He then spent three months in Brazil while the two clubs wrangled over his transfer.

'Few players have done as much to move to a club as Diego,' Felipe Luis added. 'I have never seen a player make such an effort to come there. He's an example to us all. It shows that Atletico Madrid is a big club.'

Diego Simeone rested key players in the win with goals from Yannick Carrasco and Antoine Griezmann. He made five changes ahead of Atletico's inaugural Champions League match in their impressive new stadium.

He was asked if he was confident enough in his squad that he could make five changes again next week and still overcome the Premier League opposition.

'We will look at their side,' he said. 'They have a team riddled with extraordinary talents and we will decide what team we think is needed to face them.'
