Serge Aurier's red card on his first Premier League start hardly eased the concerns of those Tottenham fans who fear the Ivorian right-back could be something of a liability.
Aurier was booked twice within the space of six second-half minutes and might well have cost Spurs the three points as West Ham mounted a late fightback.
The 24-year-old had a turbulent time at Paris Saint-Germain, getting into trouble with the law and was banned after aiming homophobic slurs at Laurent Blanc and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - but Mauricio Pochettino offered him a clean slate after his Ā£23million move.
Serge Aurier's red card on his first Premier League start hasn't eased supporters' concerns
Many Tottenham supporters fear the 24-year-old Ivorian could be something of a liability
And although Pochettino defended his sending off, the Spurs manager must be alarmed by the fact Aurier likes to play so relentlessly on the edge.
He was caught out positionally on two or three occasions during the first-half and had to make a last-ditch tackle to deny Marko Arnautovic having not read Mark Nobleās through pass.
To then pick up two needless bookings with Spurs comfortably ahead - the second for a foul on Andy Carroll when the striker had his back to goal near the touchline - was senseless.
Aurier, the former PSG player, was booked twice within six second-half minutes
Going forward, Aurier showed the other side of his game. His electric pace makes him a genuine threat going forward and he broke into the West Ham box numbers times.
But when required to revert to his supposed position and track back, itās a different matter.
Pochettino said: āOf course I am disappointed because he got the second yellow card and then the red card. But that is football.
But Tottenhan boss Mauricio Pochettino has offered the Ā£23 million player a clean slateĀ
āWhen I was a player, I made a lot of mistakes and I had a lot of problems. I understand that in football, sometimes this type of situation can happen.
āTo show your real quality, you need time. It is completely different between La Liga, France and the Premier League.ā
