Everton desperately tried to get on level terms - with Wayne Rooney, dropped to the bench, introduced after an hour - and put heavy pressure on the away goal, but Burnley held on.

Everton players feel aggrieved.
There will be four additional minutes to play. Will it be a defining four minutes...?
The centre back has been solid for Sean Dyche's side and has been awarded the man of the match.
Barnes comes on for the Burnley goalscorer.
Best move of the second half from Everton. Rooney and Sigurdsson combine before the ball falls to Calvert-Lewin who turns in the box and scuffs his shot straight at Pope.
Sigurdsson dinks a ball in and Rooney's header deflects of Lowton's hand.
No penalty. It would have been very harsh. Lowton was challenging for the ball in the air and didn't know too much about it.
Sandro comes on for Niasse, who failed to make the same impact he made in their last home Premier League game.
Gueye dribbles forward unchallenged and is invited to shoot.
He obliges but his effort goes well over the bar.

Sigurdsson had a half decent chance in the first half but took too much time in the box and allowed Cork to get back and tackle before pulling the trigger.
Burnley have looked good for their lead with Ward particularly playing well down their left flank and Koeman will need to deliver a huge team talk if Everton are going to salvage anything from this game.

The resulting corner is cleared by Burnley.
DOMINIC KING AT GOODISON PARK: What a difference it makes when a team has some pace and enthusiasm and a focus up front. It would be wrong to say Everton's play is scintillating but the fresh legs of Nikola Vlasic and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, coupled with Oumar Niasse's enthusiasm, is lifting the home team. Wayne Rooney has been left out for tactical reasons and the way Everton have started shows the folly of Ronald Koeman for trying to shoehorn him, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Davy Klaassen into the same team. This is proof that three into one doesn't go.
Niasse dribbles into the box and passes to Sigurdsson, he takes a touch and is just about to fire at goal but Jack Cork comes in with a crucial challenge and Burnley clear.
End to end stuff so far. This is a fast paced game and both sides are struggling to hold on to possession for long.
Brady gets Burnley's first shot off from just outside the box on the right but Ashley Williams blocks well.
Everton go on the counter with Vlasic leading, he finds Niasse but Tarkowski comes in with a crunching challenge in the box to dispossess him and clear.
Niasse latches on to a loose ball and knocks it over the advancing Pope but Stephen Ward is covering and clears for a corner.

Wayne Rooney smiles as he sits on the bench for the first time since his return to Everton.

Ward whipped in a dangerous cross curling away from Pickford but it's turned behind by Baines for a corner.
The corner is cleared and comes to nothing.
All eyes will be on Niasse after three goals in his last two appearances.
The ball falls to him on the edge of the box and he takes a swipe at it but it's straight at Pope.
A positive start from Everton, Leighton Baines brakes down the left and whips in a cross.
Nick Pope collects it safely.
Referee Jonathan Moss blows his whistle and Everton get us underway.
The two sides are out on the field and going through the traditional pre-match handshakes as the Premier League anthem plays out.
JOE BERNSTEIN: Ben Mee, the Burnley skipper, has proved he is tall enough to be a Premier League centre-back — and to look down on Sunday's opponents Everton.
'Wikipedia says I'm 5ft 11in, but I am actually 6ft,' Mee says. 'I heard it a lot that I might not be tall enough for a centre half, but I think too much is made of the height thing.'
Mee was tried at left back after Burnley signed him from Manchester City in 2012, but he has since flourished in the heart of Sean Dyche's back four.
Nick Pope, the rookie keeper who has done a fantastic job since replacing the injured Tom Heaton.
He was given his first taste of Clarets action last month against Crystal Palace and has impressed.
The goalkeeper could find himself busy today and all eyes will be on Pope to see if he can continue to impress.
JOE BERNSTEIN: Everton's Nikola Vlasic was never going to be overawed by playing alongside a legend like Wayne Rooney - his sister has been the biggest female track and athlete star in the world.
The 6ft 3in former world champion high jumper Blanka Vlasic gave her sport mass appeal in the same way Maria Sharapova did for tennis and it's helped her younger 19-year-old brother learn to cope with all the attention that comes with being a Premier League footballer.
'When I was a kid they always said he's the brother of Blanka Vlasic and that was a little annoying,' he admits.
The game has finished and Arsenal have continued their good form with a 2-0 victory over Brighton.
They went the whole of September unbeaten and have started October in the same fashion.
We are not too far away from kick-off now and the home support are gathering in their numbers ahead of the match.
Everton have not been in the best form of late and were held by Cypriot side Apollon Limassol in the Europa League during their last home game.
The Evertonian faithful will be hopeful of a much better display today.
DOMINIC KING: Ronald Koeman has shrugged off the mounting pressure on his position and insisted he is the right man to lead Everton.
The club have suffered a draining start to the season and the focus on Koeman increased after Everton were held 2-2 by Apollon Limassol in the Europa League on Thursday — a result which saw them booed off.
An increasing number of Evertonians are sceptical about Koeman and the slow style of football his side have been playing, but he came out fighting on Friday at the club's Finch Farm base.
Huddersfield Town 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur
Bournemouth 0-0 Leicester City
Manchester United 4-0 Crystal Palace
Stoke City 2-1 Southampton
West Bromwich Albion 2-2 Watford
West Ham United 1-0 Swansea City
Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City
The Burnley players are out on the pitch at Goodison prior to kick-off.

October 22 2016: Burnley 2-1 Everton, Premier League
April 18 2015: Everton 1-0 Burnley, Premier League
JOE BERNSTEIN: Idrissa Gana Gueye has given manager Ronald Koeman a boost by agreeing a new long-term deal to stay at Everton.
The midfielder, 28, has become a fans' favourite since arriving from Aston Villa for just £7 million in 2016 and was a target for clubs in the summer.
It has been an otherwise disappointing season for Everton, who are below Sunday's opponents Burnley and have taken only one point from two matches in the Europa League.
Burnley's starting line-up: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward, Brady, Cork, Hendrick, Defour, Arfield, Wood
Subs: Vokes, Barnes, Gudmundsson, Westwood, Lindegaard, Bardsley, Long
Everton's starting line-up: Pickford, Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines, Gueye,
Schneiderlin, Vlasic, Calvert-Lewin, Niasse, Sigurdsson.
Subs: Sandro, Rooney, Klaassen, Stekelenburg, Davies, Holgate,
Lookman
