Ian Ladyman at St James' Park: Liverpool surrendered a first-half lead on Sunday as they struggled to break down an obdurate Newcastle despite dominating for large parts.

Philippe Coutinho fired Liverpool ahead with a trademark curling finish from outside the penalty area in the 29th minute.

But the Reds' lead lasted barely seven minutes, after Joselu equalised in bizarre fashion with the ball rebounding off his foot from a Joel Matip tackle and into the net.

Full-time: Newcastle United 1-1 Liverpool

Rafa Benitez and Jurgen Klopp embrace on the sidelines at the end of an honorable draw on Tyneside. Plenty of effort from both Newcastle and Liverpool but no winner in the end.

Both goals came in the first half - a stunner from Philippe Coutinho gave the Reds the lead on 29 minutes, only for Joselu to level things up just a few minutes later.

18:21
90+2min - Diame snuffed out

That free-kick leads to a corner and the volume levels rise once again inside St James'.

It comes to Diame about six yards out, he tries to get a shot away but Lovren throws himself at the ball and takes enough sting off it for Mignolet to save.

Massive sigh of relief for the Liverpool fans.

18:19
90min - Final sub for Newcastle

The third and final sub for Newcastle - Ayoze Perez goes off and it's Mohamed Diame on.

We're into three minutes of added time and Newcastle have a free-kick.

18:17
88min - Ox heads over the top

Another chance for Liverpool, who keep coming forward in these closing minutes.

Moreno does well to hook across a ball from the byline and it's headed over the top by Oxlade-Chamberlain, diving in.

18:13
84min - Solanke header wide

A tough chance for Solanke, who dives forward to meet a Moreno cross but it just flashes wide.

18:11
83min - Sighting of the Ox

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is being prepped to come on for the visitors. The man taken off is Salah.

18:07
79min - Gayle comes on for Newcastle

A second switch for Newcastle and we'll see Dwight Gayle coming on for the goalscorer Joselu. 12 minutes left in the game.

18:06
78min - Shelvey off the line

Trouble for Newcastle from a corner and it needs Jonjo Shelvey to get back on the line and head the ball clear after Lovren met the delivery with a looping back post header.

18:03
74min - Changes for both teams

And here are those changes - three in total.

Firmino comes on for Daniel Sturridge, while Solanke is replacing Mane.

For Newcastle, it's Isaac Hayden replacing Mikel Merino.

17:59
70min - Manquillo ball overhit

The rain falling hard now in Newcastle as Manquillo tries to pick out Ritchie with a searching cross-field pass. It's overhit and Ritchie runs down the soggy bank into the sponsor boards.

Liverpool preparing a double substitution... it will be Dominic Solanke and Roberto Firmino to come on.

17:53
64min - Elliot beats Sturridge to the ball

That's a lovely ball over the top by Mohamed Salah nicely into the path of Daniel Sturridge but Rob Elliot spotted the danger, raced from his line and claimed the ball just ahead of the striker.

17:49
60min - Still evenly-balanced here

30 minutes left at St James' Park and the game is still on a knife-edge. Liverpool currently enjoying 78 per cent of the possession but Newcastle still carrying a threat on the counter.

Mikel Merino of Newcastle (L) competes with Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool
17:47
58min - Gomez cautioned

Another booking, this time for Joe Gomez after a heavy aerial challenge on Christian Atsu that briefly had tempers flaring.

17:45
56min - Perez into the book

The first booking of the afternoon goes to Perez for a foul, before Merino concedes a free-kick 35 yards out for upending Salah.

Henderson steps up to take and sends the ball straight into the wall.

17:40
50min - Sturridge and Salah can't capitalise on mistake

Great chance for the visitors. Salah charging forward and miscontrols the ball. It should be a straightforward clearance for Clark but he doesn't connect and Sturridge is in the clear behind him.

Elliot does well to save Sturridge's shot and then Salah, following in, fires high over the unguarded net. A comedy of errors all round.

17:37
49min - Liverpool on the break

Liverpool on their first attack of the second half as Mane bursts forward and plays a pass wide left to Salah. His cross is a little too high for Wijnaldum in the middle and he can't direct his header on target.

17:34
Second-half: Liverpool get us underway again

No changes at the interval.

17:18
Half-time: Newcastle United 1-1 Liverpool

The whistle blows and applause right around St James' Park with the match evenly poised.

Liverpool went ahead through Philippe Coutinho's stunning curling shot on the half-hour, but Newcastle level somewhat fortuitously after Joel Matip's attempted tackle went in off Joselu.

All to play for in the second period.

17:16
45min - Two minutes added on
17:15
44min - Plenty of entertainment here

We're nearly at half-time and will be grateful for a breather after those two goals. It's been an entertaining opening 45 on Tyneside.

17:07
GOAL! Newcastle 1 (Joselu 37) Liverpool 1

Newcastle are level and with a chunky slice of good fortune.

Joselu was played clear by Shelvey and is bearing down on goal. Joel Matip, though, is right behind him and, as Mignolet advances, the defender makes what is a really good tackle.

But, unfortunately for the Liverpool man, he succeeds only on knocking the ball against Joselu and it rolls past Mignolet and into the empty net.

Some good fortune for Newcastle but they'll gladly accept it.

17:00
GOAL! Newcastle 0 Liverpool 1 (Philippe Coutinho 29)

They should have taken the lead five minutes ago, but now Liverpool do find themselves in front - and in stunning fashion.

Philippe Coutinho, collecting the ball wide left but confronted by two or three black and white shirts, somehow cuts in and works space to shoot.

He lets fly from 25 yards and curls a superb shot into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance at all. An outstanding goal, even by his high standards.

16:55
24min - Liverpool should be ahead

A superb chance for Liverpool and it's left Jurgen Klopp with his head in hands.

From a short corner, Wijnaldum flicks the ball onto the near post, then it rebounds out to Lovren, whose shot is blocked on the line by Yedlin.

Finally, amid a scramble, Mane fires it wide. Liverpool really should be ahead, Newcastle riding their luck at the back.

16:50
19min - Mane into the side-netting

Gomez using his pace and sense of adventure to carry Liverpool forward down the right. It's a deep cross that Mane does well to make contract with beyond the back post. Would have been Van Basten-esque to score from there and it ruffles the side netting.

Liverpool's pace is causing Newcastle problems.

16:48
17min - Liverpool handball shout

Liverpool appealing for a handball as Daniel Sturridge weaves his way into the box and sees his shot blocked by Lascelles. Would have been very harsh on the Newcastle man as the ball bounced up off his legs and struck his arm.

16:46
15min - Manquillo takes a blow

A pause in play as Manquillo is bundled to the ground and isn't moving too well when he climbs back to his feet. Involved in a mid-air collision with Joe Gomez.

It gives Rafa Benitez the chance to issue some urgent instructions to Jonjo Shelvey.

Manquillo looks fine to continue.

16:43
13min - Ritchie tests Mignolet

More attacking intent by Newcastle, as Shelvey sprays a low pass into Ritchie on the edge of the Liverpool box. He shifts left and works space to shoot, but it's a comfortable save for Mignolet.

16:39
PICTURE: Newcastle fans' pre-match message to Rafa

It reads: 'We follow you everywhere, we’ll always have your back. For all their lies we will never doubt you, we are with you.'

Inspired by a banner used in tribute to him by Valencia fans apparently.

16:38
7min - Two chances for Newcastle

Newcastle trying their best to unsettle that notoriously shaky Liverpool back line early on. Shelvey curls in a shot that is an easy collect for Simon Mignolet, then Jamaal Lascelles shoots low from range and it is again easily saved.

16:35
4min - First Liverpool attack

Liverpool's speedy forward line testing out the Newcastle defence for the first time.

Mohamed Salah sprung forward down the right after Jonjo Shelvey's shot was blocked on the edge of the Liverpool box. Salah got the ball across to Sadio Mane and his pass was just beyond Salah in the centre and Sturridge can't retrieve the situation.

16:31
Kick-off: Newcastle get us started

Off we go then in the third of today's Premier League matches.

16:30
Minute's appreciation for Freddie Shepherd

The two teams are just pausing before kick-off for a minute's silence in memory of Freddy Shepherd, the former Newcastle chairman, who died last week. In fact, it has turned into a minute's applause.

Newcastle have signed non-disclosure agreements with a series of potential investors as owner Mike Ashley attempts to find a way forward for the club.

It is understood the Magpies have held initial talks with several interested parties, but that no deal is imminent.

The news follows reports of an approach by a Chinese consortium and claims that Ashley is ready to drop his asking price to £380million.

Opta big match stats - Part Two

Rafael Benitez has faced former club Liverpool twice in the Premier League – drawing both matches 2-2, with Chelsea in April 2013 and Newcastle in April 2016.

Rafa Benitez won 134 points in his opening 74 Premier League games as Liverpool manager – in comparison, Jurgen Klopp has won one point more in his first 74 league games as Reds’ boss (135).

Daniel Sturridge has scored in all four of his Premier League starts at St. James’ Park in the Premier League, scoring five goals in those games, including three in his last two for Liverpool.

Sturridge could become only the fourth player in Premier League history to score in five consecutive away starts at a Premier League ground, after Alan Shearer at Ellland Road against Leeds, Dion Dublin at White Hart Lane against Spurs and Ruud van Nistelrooy at St. James’ Park against Newcastle.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 23 Premier League matches in the month of October (W13 D10) since a 2-0 defeat to Everton in October 2010.

Mohamed Salah has scored in four of his six Premier League appearances for Liverpool so far. No player has ever scored in five of their first seven Premier League games for the club.

Joe Bernstein: Regarded by critics as the posterboy for Liverpool's defensive frailties under Brendan Rodgers and now Jurgen Klopp, it would have been easy for Alberto Moreno to hide away or even leave Merseyside altogether.

Instead, the heavily tattooed 25-year-old is sat defiantly in the media room at Melwood ahead of Sunday's match at Newcastle United, fronting up, avoiding nothing.

In rattle-fast Spanish, aided by a translator, he explains with passion and conviction why he stayed at Anfield, why it's wrong for Liverpool's defenders to carry the can for conceding goals, and why his personal form this season has been good enough to make the anti-Morenoistas 'shut up'.

Rafa Benitez regrets that he was denied the chance to build a dynasty at Liverpool.

Ahead of Sunday's visit to St St James's Park by his former club, Benitez said that he would have been happy to spend the remainder of his career at Anfield after leading Liverpool to their fifth European Champions title in 2005.

But after a change of ownership, the departure of chairman David Moores and chief executive Rick Parry, a disillusioned Benitez left Liverpool in 2010 after six seasons in charge.
