BBC Match of the Day 2 subtitles refer to Newcastle United as 'the black and white scum' in gaffe

  • Commentator Guy Mowbray was talking about Daniel Sturridge's goalscoring
  • He spoke about his record against 'the team in black and white' on MOTD2
  • But the subtitles instead referred to 'the black and white scum' on screen

The BBC was left with egg on its face after a subtitling error slipped through the cracks on Match of the Day 2.

During highlights from Newcastle's draw against Liverpool, commentator Guy Mowbray discussed Daniel Sturridge's excellent goalscoring record in matches at St James' Park.

'Sturridge has scored in all four of his previous Premier League starts at Newcastle. For the Reds against the team in black and white, he boasts five goals in five appearances,' he said.

But the subtitles flashed something else up, referring to Newcastle as 'the black and white scum'.

That phrase is a nickname that is often given to Rafa Benitez's club by fans of their rivals Sunderland, although there was nothing malicious behind it.

Sportsmail understands the subtitling software incorrectly recognised what Mowbray had said.

A BBC spokesperson told Sportsmail: 'Our live subtitling service is normally very accurate and makes our content much more accessible, but there are times when unfortunate errors occur. On this occasion the error was spotted and corrected immediately.'

Twitter user @paulbrownUK joked: 'MOTD2 subtitler evidently not a Newcastle fan'.

Newcastle went on to draw the game against Liverpool courtesy of a lucky strike from Joselu.

The Spanish forward deflected the ball into the back of the Liverpool net after Joel Matip tackled the ball out of his feet, unfortunately rebounding it off his shins in the process.

Philippe Coutinho had earlier put Jurgen Klopp's side ahead with a long-range shot.
