Barcelona eye move for Anthony Martial as they look to take advantage of Manchester United star's understudy role under Jose Mourinho

Barcelona want to take advantage of Jose Mourinho's reluctance to hand Anthony Martial a starting spot at Manchester United to bring him to the Nou Camp.

Martial has struggled to nail down a spot in Mourinho's XI at Old Trafford, starting just once in the Premier League so far this season, and the Catalan club could look to tempt him away to solve issues of their own.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish side are monitoring the Frenchman's situation at Old Trafford and believe he is good enough for the Nou Camp, after watching him impress when he has been able to get on the pitch this season.

Barcelona are currently short of options on the left-wing, Martial's usual position, with just Denis Suarez and Gerard Deulofeu at their disposal.

New signing Ousmane Dembele is also out with a hamstring injury for the foreseeable future and Barcelona believe Martial has the quality required.

Despite finding himself behind young Englishman Marcus Rashford in Mourinho's pecking order, Martial has made an impact when called up with five goals and six assists so far this season.

Despite this, he is not getting regular minutes in the Premier League. The Frenchman has started just once so far and has been a late substitute in five domestic fixtures this season. In total he has played just 139 minutes in the league.

Mourinho seems to be saving Martial for cup competitions with his only other starts coming in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

He has often been used as a substitute, with the form of Rashford seemingly keeping him out of the team and he is unlikely to play down the middle give Romelu Lukaku's hot start to life in red and the prospect of Zlatan Ibrahimovic returning from injury in the new year.

The Mundo Deportivo report suggests Barcelona are hoping to use this uncertainty to persuade him to move to Barcelona sooner rather than later.

Martial moved to Manchester United from Monaco in 2015 for an estimated £58million, scoring 30 goals in his 100 appearances to date.
