David Moyes insists his spell in charge of Manchester United would have been 'a lot different' had they signed Cesc Fabregas and Gareth Bale.

The Scot, who was sacked only 10 months after replacing the retired Sir Alex Ferguson, also maintains no other manager could have done better than him.

Moyes left United seventh in the table and out of the domestic and European cups. But the 54-year-old believes he would have had more success with only a couple more new players.

Moyes believes securing Cesc Fabregas and Gareth Bale would have been the 'perfect start'

'Things would have been a lot different if we had landed our main transfer targets,' he told the Mirror.

'We were in for Gareth Bale and Cesc Fabregas. They were genuine targets, but for one reason or another we didn't get them over the line.

'Getting them would have been the perfect start in terms of reshaping the squad I inherited.'

Moyes won only half of his 34 league games in charge at Old Trafford before being sacked in April 2014.

He was replaced by Louis van Gaal, who landed the FA Cup but also failed to launch a serious bid for the league title.

Jose Mourinho claimed last month that United had 'failed to evolve' in the three years since Ferguson left his post. But though Moyes accepts he failed to live up to the club's lofty expectations, he claims he did as well as anyone could have been expected to do.

'I accept totally that when you are manager of Manchester United, you have to win. I didn't win enough.

'But I don't think there is a manager out there who would have been able to do something better or quicker in the time I was given after Sir Alex retired. It was all about small margins.'
