Liverpool could not find a way through in a breathless stalemate against fierce rivals Manchester United at Anfield.

Romelu Lukaku was in the thick of the action, Peter Schmeichel sung the praises of David de Gea and a couple of familiar faces were in the stands.

In a game filled with high drama and incidents, Sportsmail were on hand to sweep up anything you might have missed.

Mourinho makes peace with Liverpool fan

The United boss called on an opposition fan in the crowd to give him the ball back. 

Clearly the supporter didn't fancy doing what he was told so chucked the ball away. 

Mourinho at least saw the funny side and shook the hand of the fan as both parties surprisingly made peace during the heat of the game.

Romelu Lukaku gets away with one

The powerful Belgian chopped down Joe Gomez, horribly mistiming his tackle and sending the defender high into the air. 

It looked a nailed on yellow card but referee Martin Atkinson opted to give the striker a word of warning instead.

Unsurprisingly the Liverpool fans were seething at what they perceived to be a dreadful decision.

Peter Schmeichel took to Twitter to show his admiration for a brilliant David de Gea save in the first half. 

The legendary United stopped was commenting on the Spaniard's instinctive block of Joel Matip's effort from close range. 

De Gea stuck out a boot at the last second to prevent Liverpool from taking the lead.

The United forward was in the thick of the action again with slow motion replays showed him connecting, seemingly accidentally, with Dejan Lovren's face.

It just looked a clumsy tangle but as he stepped over the body on the ground his studs flicked into the Croatian's face who was in visible discomfort.

The King's stand

Kenny Dalglish was given a hero's welcome by the crowd as the stand named in his honour was officially opened. 

The club legend stood in the centre of the pitch as the crowd raised placards spelling out 'The King'.  

Dalglish had joked before the game that it was nice to see the stand with his name on without 'in memory of' written before it.

Xabi Alonso back at his old stomping ground

Liverpool supporters still hold enormous affection for their old pass master.

The former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder took in the action with his son Jontxu who was kitted out appropriately in a Liverpool shirt.

Having retired at the end of last season, the Spaniard is blessed with plenty of time to follow his old club, though no doubt he would rather have been executing defence-splitting passes on the turf.

Return of the old guard 

Louis van Gaal is a man who knows a thing or two about beating Liverpool and the former United boss was in attendance at Anfield. 

He shook hands warmly with Mourinho in the tunnel before the game and perhaps passed on a word of advice. 

Despite his tumultuous reign at Old Trafford, the Dutchman was unbeaten against the Reds as United boss after winning all four matches.
