Arsene Wenger could face charges from the Football Association after he angrily confronted referee Neil Swarbrick following Arsenal's 2-1 defeat at Watford.

According to the Evening Standard, the French boss chased the official down the tunnel at Vicarage Road and even entered the referee's room where the two could be heard engaging in a heated argument.

Wenger made his feelings towards the officiating during the game clear in his post-match press conference as he called the decision to award the hosts a second-half penalty 'scandalous'.

GRAHAM POLL'S VERDICT ON RICHARLISON'S 'DIVE'

Richarlison should be the first player banned for 'Successful deception of a match official' after diving to win a penalty. Referee Neil Swarbrick was fooled by the Brazilian's dive.

However, with the three-strong review panel having to agree unanimously, he could escape the two-match ban an FA charge attracts.

Indeed, Richarlison, who won the penalty after going down under pressure from defender Hector Bellerin, is also under investigation from the FA and could face action if he is deemed to have dived.

There is no legislation against a manager entering the officials room inside a ground but it is the manner of the discussion between Wenger and Swarbrick, if those details are disclosed in the referee report, which could place the Arsenal boss in hot water.

Still fuming after the full-time whistle, the 67-year-old did not hold back in his post-match briefing.

Wenger was incensed by the referee's decision to award Watford a second-half penalty

'We were unlucky. That penalty was a bit ridiculous,' he told reporters at Vicarage Road after the game.

'I think it's a scandalous decision. We got ourselves into many situations when we could have scored, but we did not take the chances.'

Watford moved above Arsenal into fourth in the Premier League table after Tom Cleverley's late winner on Saturday.

Arsenal are in sixth with 13 points from their opening eight matches.
