United are keen for Mourinho to remain in charge for longer and sources had suggested that could be for as long as a decade.

Discussions are expected to commence in the coming months after United's encouraging start which leaves them just two points behind rivals Manchester City in the Premier League.

Mourinho is thought to hold ambitions to coach at international level but club chiefs are not worried about the potential of him departing anytime soon.

'I'm still a coach with worries, with ambitions, and with the desire to do new things,' Mourinho told French TV. 'I'm sure that I won't end my career here.
