Robert Pires believes Mesut Ozil gives off 'the impression he's annoyed at Arsenal'.
German playmaker Ozil will see his contract at the Gunners run out next summer, paving the way for either a move in January or a free transfer before the new season.
And his demeanour of late has suggested to Pires - who twice won the title with Arsenal and still trains with the club - that he is unhappy with the calibre of the squad around him.
Mesut Ozil gives off the impression he is frustrated by Arsenal, according to Robert Pires
Ozil trained with his team-mates on Wednesday ahead of a game against Red Star Belgrade
'Ozil is a warrior who wants to win something, and currently he makes the impression that he's annoyed Arsenal have not assembled a squad which can win something,' Pires told ESPN.
'They only spent money on Alexandre Lacazette. That's not enough to compete for the top spots.'
Despite his old club's shortcomings, Pires remains an advocate of manager Arsene Wenger, for whom he worked during his time in north London.
Ozil will be out of contract at the end of the season and could leave the club
'It's incredibly difficult to consistently remain at the top in England,' he said.
'But I still believe in Arsenal and first of all in Arsene Wenger. I think it's right he penned a new two-year deal.'
Arsenal face Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League this week and Ozil trained as normal with his team-mates at their London Colney facility on Wednesday in preparation for the game.
