Gabriel Jesus, Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele named as final three players on Golden Boy shortlist

  • The Golden Boy shortlist has been cut from 24 names down to the final three
  • Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus is the sole Premier League representative left
  • PSG's Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele will challenge Jesus
  • Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches won the prestigious award in 2016

Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus is one of the three remaining players on the shortlist for the European Golden Boy award.

Jesus joins Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele after the 24-strong shortlist was cut to the final three names.

The Brazilian has impressed for City since arriving from Palmeiras in January, scoring seven goals in 11 appearances in all competitions during the second half of last season.

Jesus picked up where he left off this campaign and has been preferred by manager Pep Guardiola as City's lone striker to Sergio Aguero.

Mbappe, who doesn't turn 20 until December 2018, became the highest-scoring teenager in Champions League history this week during PSG's 4-0 win over Anderlecht on Wednesday night.

The Frenchman joined PSG this summer on an initial loan deal before a £166m permanent move next year after helping fire Monaco to the Ligue 1 title.

His compatriot Dembele also moved in the summer transfer window, joining Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund for an initial £96m to replace Neymar.

Dembele's progress in Spain so far has been curtailed by injury with just three appearances so far for Ernesto Valverde's side.

Italian newspaper Tuttosport are organising the 2017 award, which honours the best player aged under 21 in European football based on their performances over the calendar year.

The original 24-man shortlist included six other Premier League players including Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Liverpool's Dominic Solanke.

Tottenham right back Kyle Walker-Peters, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and West Ham's Reece Oxford also made the original list but have since been cut.

Bayern Munich's Renato Sanches won last year's gong after his performances for Portugal during their successful Euro 2016 campaign. The 20-year-old is currently on a season-long loan with Swansea.
