Richarlison does things 'a bit like a young Ronaldo' says Jamie Redknapp despite Watford forward's glaring misses in defeat against Chelsea

Jamie Redknapp has lavished praise on Watford forward Richarlison - despite his two key missed in the Hornets' 4-2 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Richarlison has enjoyed a fine start to his career in the Premier League, racking up three goals and two assists in his first eight games for Marco Silva's side.

The former Fluminense ace showcased his talents against the Blues despite fluffing his lines while Watford were in the ascendancy.

The 20-year-old put a key chance wide from close range just moments before laying on the assist for Roberto Pereyra to put the visitors ahead on 49 minutes. Later on, he nodded wide a free header from inside the six-yard box.

He received backing from Silva after the game and although he missed the chances, Redknapp believes he has the making of a very special player overall.

The Sportsmail columnist said while working as a pundit for Sky Sports: 'I have to be very careful because I know what people are like, they'll start to say that I'm comparing him to Ronaldo or saying that he'll be better than him.

'[But] he has the capability, the little things that he does are a little bit like a young Ronaldo.

'I'm not saying he can be as good as him but he does special things on the ball that only a few people can do - he drifts past people, there's a little bit of petulance in his game still but if the manager can polish that diamond that's there then he's on to something.

'You can have a super talent and I remember seeing Ronaldo and thinking this kid is so special. He's got the lot it's just the little bits that he needs to polish.'

Richarlison and Watford gave Chelsea a fright during their early Saturday kick-off in west London, but ultimately walked away empty handed.

Pedro put the Blues ahead before Abdoulaye Doucoure and Pereyra struck either side of half-time.

Michy Batshuayi proved to be the difference maker when he emerged from the bench after 61 minutes to level things up before Cesar Azpilicueta put Antonio Conte's men ahead.

Batshuayi then put the icing on the cake in the final few minutes of extra time.

Silva said after the game: 'It was a really unfair result. It didn't reflect what happened in the match, I like how our team played and I like how our team controlled the game.

'We reacted well after first half, we didn't create a lot of chances but we controlled the match, in second half I saw one team play on the pitch playing to win.

'We had clear chance for Richarlison at 2-1 to finish the match, but two mistakes from our team cost us.'
