  • Manchester United faced Swansea aiming for a Carabao Cup quarter-final place

  • Swansea starting XI: Nordfeldt, Rangel, Van der Hoorn, Mawson, Olsson, Ki, Mesa, Clucas, Routledge, Ayew, McBurnie. Subs: Mulder, Naughton, Fernandez, Fer, Fulton, Narsingh, Abraham
  • Manchester United starting XI: Romero, Darmian, Lindelof, Smalling, Blind, Tuanzebe, Herrera, Lingard, McTominay, Martial, Rashford. Subs: Pereira, Jones, Shaw, Matic, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Lukaku
  • RESULTS: Swansea 0-2  United, Bristol City 4-1 Crystal Palace, Bournemouth 3-1 Middlesbrough, Leicester 3-1 Leeds, Arsenal 2-1 Norwich (AET), Manchester City 0-0 Wolves (City win 4-1 on penalties)
  • Jesse Lingard opened the scoring for United after neat play by Marcus Rahsford
  • The forward doubled their lead with a bullet header during the second half
  • At the Emirates, Eddie Nketiah netted a brace as Arsenal overcame Norwich
  • Meanwhile Manchester City got through after beating Wolves 4-1 on penalties

Eight of the Manchester United players who featured in their humiliating defeat at Huddersfield on Saturday were 'invited' by Jose Mourinho to try their luck again on Tuesday night in a far from glamorous Carabao Cup tie in rainy south Wales.

Instead of acting as a punishment however, it proved a good way to exorcise the demons, not least for Jesse Lingard who had endured the full 90 minutes at the John Smith's Stadium but bounced back in style to record the first double of his Manchester United career.

The League Cup holders are therefore into this season's quarter-finals and Mourinho could surpass Brian Clough and Sir Alex Ferguson later this season by lifting the competition for a record fifth time.

Manchester City 4-1 Wolves - AGUERO WINS IT FOR CITY!

Ahhhhhh a Panenka!

What a penalty to win it.

But what a game and what a display by Wolves. It wasn't enough though, as City secure their place in the quarters.

22:40
Manchester City 3-1 Wolves - Sane SCORES... Just!!

It creeps in via the underside of the bar. No chance for the keeper. City one way from winning it. It's Aguero...

22:39
Manchester City 2-1 Wolves - Bravo SAVES from Coady!

Match point City. Not a great penalty. Bravo saves to his left.

22:38
Manchester City 2-1 Wolves - N'Diaye denied by Bravo!!

Good save to his right after midfielder slipped.

22:37
Manchester City 2-1 Wolves - Yaya Toure scores!

City lead for the first time thanks to a super penalty into the top corner.

22:36
Manchester City 1-1 Wolves - Kevin De Bruyne

Norris goes the right way but KDB gets too much power on it.

22:36
Manchester City 0-1 Wolves - Bonatini scores!

Cool as you like. Slots it in the bottom right-hand corner.

22:34
Here we go!

Hold tight. Here come the spot kicks.

Wolves to take first!

Leo Bonatini with the ball in his hands. Remember folks it's ABBA system.

22:30
PENALTIES IT IS!

Well well. 90 minutes couldn't separate them.

Nor could 120.

So it's spot kicks.

Who will hold their nerve?

22:27

117 mins: Raheem Steling is fouled on the edge of the box by Alfred N'Diaye.

Free-kick, dangerous position, but De Bruyne fires over the bar.

Penalties beckon....

22:24

Into the final five minutes at the Etihad...

Can either side finally find a winner?

22:20
Chance Sane!

111 mins: What is in the Manchester air tonight?

Now it's Leroy Sane to miss a glorious chance for the home side. The ball drops to the Germany international about 10 yards out but his effort drifts just over the bar.

How is this still goalless? Both sides have had glorious opportunities to win it but neither can find the net.

22:18
FULL TIME: Arsenal 2-1 Norwich

It's over at the Emirates and Eddie Nketiah is the hero for the Gunners.

What a story for the 18-year-old, who came on five minutes from time with his side 1-0 down.

Barely half an hour later his double has secured a quarter-final place.

22:17
Back underway at the Etihad

Can either side find a breakthrough? Wolves defending doggedly.

22:16
PICTURED: Sportsmail's KEVIN QUIGLEY at the Emirates
22:11

113 mins: Joe Willock comes on for Jack Wilshere, who is given a great reception by the Emirates crowd.

Into the final six minutes.

22:10
Almost three for Nketiah

Well the story could have got even better.

The 18-year-old is fresh and he skips through on goal and fires a shot on goal but it's saved.

Now Norwich are incandescent after Mathieu Debuchy escapes punishment for a clumsy challenge on James Husband. It's not over this.

22:07

Another couple of chances for Sterling!

City can't find a way through Wolves, however, as first Norris makes a crucial save and then Sterling is denied by some brilliant last-ditch blocks by the dogged Wolves back four.

22:04
Back underway at the Emirates

Can Norwich find a way back into this game?

22:03
Into the additional 30 at City

Bright Enobakhare is off for the visitors after missing his two glorious chances to secure the victory for Wolves.

The big guns are on for the hosts, too. John Stones and Leroy Sane have been introduced.

22:02
Great stat from the Etihad...
22:00
EXTRA TIME HALF TIME

It's 2-1 at the break and Eddie Nketiah is 15 minutes away from being the hero for the Gunners.

Can Norwich respond?

21:58
Substitution

104 mins: Alex Iwobi, who looks to have a bit of cramp, is replaced by Josh Dasilva.

21:52
Drama at the Etihad!

Chances for both sides in the final minutes of added time here.

First Ilkay Gundogan misses an opportunity for City and suddenly Wolves break and Bright Enobakhare is put through again.

But again Claudio Bravo denies him.

And it's full time, we're heading for another 30 minutes!

21:49
GOAL! Arsenal 2-1 Norwich!

What a night for Eddie Nketiah!

The youngster rises highest from a corner and fires a header past Angus Gunn.

He's turned the game on its head and Arsneal lead in extra time.

Here's a stat for you: He's the first Arsenal player, born after Arsene Wenger was appointed boss, to net for the club.

21:45
The attention turns to the Emirates and Etihad

Don't worry sports fans, the Carabao Cup action is not over!

Arsenal face extra time against Norwich shortly, while Manchester City and Wolves are heading toward the final whistle with the score at 0-0.

Raheem Sterling has just missed a great chance for the home side, after Wolves keeper Will Norris had parried a Kevin De Bruyne cross into his path, 10 yards out.

21:38
FULL TIME SCORES

From the 7:45 kick offs:

Swansea 0-2 Manchester United

Arsenal 1-1 Norwich (Extra Time to follow)

Bristol City 4-1 Crystal Palace

Bournemouth 3-1 Middlesbrough

Leicester 3-1 Leeds

Still playing at the Etihad where it remains 0-0 with 12 minutes to play...

21:36
FULL TIME! Swansea 0-2 Manchester United

Job done for Jose Mourinho and his players.

Jesse Lingard netted a brilliant brace and United are in the draw for the quarter finals.

Leroy Fer was denied brilliantly at point-blank range by Romero right at the death but by then the game was beyond Paul Clement's side!

21:33

90 mins: Three minutes added on at the Liberty...

21:32
GOAL! Leicester 3-1 Leeds (Mahrez 88)

Game over at the King Power.

And what a way to do it. Riyad Mahrez picks up the ball on the right wing and drives inside before curling into the far corner and securing his side's spot in the last-eight.

21:30
Here comes Luke Shaw...

86 mins: Swansea really struggling to make any dent on United here.

The game is drifting towards the final whistle and Luke Shaw will get a run out.

The left-back replaces Martial and is given a warm reception from the away fans.

21:28
GOAL! Arsenal 1-1 Norwich (Nketiah, 85)

Relief around the Emirates as Arsenal level the scores.

And what a moment for Eddie Nketiah! The youngster turns in a corner only 15 minutes after coming on.

21:26
GOAL! Bournemouth 3-1 Middlesbrough (Afobe 83)

This is turning into a return to remember for Callum Wilson, who scored one and has now made one.

The forward is slid in down the right hand channel and he fires the ball across to Benik Afobe to make it three

21:23

80 mins: Into the final 10 minutes here and Swansea are pressing to get back into the game but they're struggling to create any clear chances.

United nearly in the hat for the last eight.

21:19
GOAL! Bournemouth 2-1 Middlesbrough (Wilson (Pen) 75)

A massive goal for Bournemouth and a massive goal for Callum Wilson, who is finally back in the side following his terrible injury.

The forward steps up to take a spot kick and makes no mistake after Dael Fry fouls Simpson.

21:18

75 mins: Sergio Romero is called into action for what feels like the first time.

And it's Abraham who nearly makes an immediate impact.

The forward curls towards goal from 25 yards and the keeper tips it behind.

Meanwhile Tuanzebe goes into the book..

21:16
Substitution and yellow cards at the Liberty

72 mins: Tammy Abraham is (finally) brought on by Clement, replacing McBurnie.

A few minutes earlier, Ki went into the book for a foul on McTominay.

United cruising here.

21:15
Scores on the doors

Latest scores, with 20 minutes left in the 7:45 kick offs:

Swansea 0-2 Manchester United

Bournemouth 1-1 Middlesbrough

Bristol City 4-1 Crystal Palace

Arsenal 0-1 Norwich

Leicester 2-1 Leeds

And... Manchester City 0-0 Wolves

21:13
GOAL! Leicester 2-1 Leeds (Slimani)

Slimani, who earlier missed an absolute sitter for Leicester, have turned the game around.

Iheahacho finds space in the inside left channel to fire a low cross for Slimani to put the home side in front.

21:11
Substitutions at the Liberty

Both Clement and Mourinho make their move at the Liberty. Marcus Rashford is replaced by Romelu Lukaku, while Nemanja Matic replaces Ander Herrera.

For the home side, meanwhile, Leroy Fer has come on Roque Mesa.

21:09
GOAL! Bristol City 4-1 Crystal Palace (O'Dowda, 66)

Oh dear oh dear for Palace...

That surely is that for them now.

Callum O'Dowda has fired Bristol City into a 4-1 lead with a brilliant long-range strike.

21:07
More on that Tavernier equaliser at Bournemouth from ADAM SHERGOLD

And a quick response by Middlesbrough, who’ve hauled themselves level just seven minutes after going behind.

Adama Traore steamed forward through the middle and threaded a lovely through pass into Marcus Tavernier who slid the ball into the far corner despite the slide tackle of Steve Cook.

Could go either way now…

21:04
GOAL! Bristol City 3-1 Crystal Palace (Joe Bryan, 60)

Well, well. It's all going Pete Tong for Roy in the West Country as Joe Bryan nets a brilliant third for the home side.

Meanwhile, Slimani has missed an absolute sitter for Leicester...

21:02
GOAL! Swansea 0-2 Manchester United (Lingard, 59)

Another brilliant, brilliant goal from Jesse Lingard could have killed this tie.

Tuanzebe does well to bring the ball out of defence and find Darmian, who curls the ball towards an onrushing Lingard who fires a header past Nordfeldt from just inside the box.

21:00
GOAL! Bournemouth 1-1 Middlesbrough (Tavernier, 56)

All level at the Vitality as Marcus Tavernier gets in down the left and brings the Championship side level.

20:59
Clucas in the book

56 mins: Sam Clucas goes into the book after coming through the back of Marcus Rashford.

20:56

53 mins: A quiet start to the second half here at the Liberty.

Both sides have had promising positions, neither has made them count. Ominously for the home side, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku are warming up.

20:55
Sportsmail's ADAM SHERGOLD at Bournemouth

A breakthrough here on the south coast early int he second-half. And on the balance of play in this game, there can be no complaints that it’s gone to Bournemouth.

Jack Simpson, the 20-year-old defender making his full debut tonight, has got it. Ryan Fraser sent across a corner and Simpson read the flight really well before sticking out a leg to guide it home on the volley despite Dael Fry trying to halt him.

That’s quite a memorable debut!

20:52
GOAL! Bournemouth 1-0 Middlesbrough (Simpson 49)

The deadlock has been broken at the Vitality Stadium and it's Jack Simpson, who hooks in a corner to put the home side in front.

20:49
Here we go again

The two teams are back on the Liberty Stadium pitch.

No more subs from either side at the break. But in the likes of Tammy Abraham and Juan Mata, both CLement and Mourinho have firepower to bring off the bench.

Who will book their place in the quarter-finals? Let's find out.

20:45
Chance Wolves!

Oh Bright Enobakhare!

What a chance for Wolves to take the lead at the Etihad.

The 19-year-old robs Mangala about 25 yards out and is through on goal. But Claudio Bravo comes out, spreads himself out and keeps the scores level.

20:35
HALF TIME ROUND UP

So, finally some time to breathe.

Seven goals across five goals all came in the space of only 19 minutes.

Here are the scores on the doors, as my Dad always says:

Arsenal 0-1 Norwich

Bournemouth 0-0 Middlesbrough

Bristol City 2-1 Crystal Palace

Leicester 1-1 Leeds

Swansea 0-1 Manchester United

Manchester City 0-0 Wolves (35 minutes played)

Jacob Murphy celebrates his opening goal for Norwich at Arsenal
20:32
HALF TIME: Swansea 0-1 Manchester United

The end of the first half has arrived at the Liberty and across the grounds in tonight's tie, with the exception of City vs Wolves.

Lingard's peach is the difference for now.

But Swansea have created chances of their own. None of the ties is over by any stretch.

20:28
Chance for both sides!

Scott McTominay, in only his fifth appearance for United, wastes a good chance to double their lead.

Anthony Martial lays the ball off for the midfielder on the edge of the box. But the onrushing McTominay leans back and fires over.

Meanwhile, at the other end, Clucas curls just wide of Romero's right-hand post.

Good game, this.

20:27
Yellow card

Angel Rangel is into the book for a cynical challenge. He now must tread carefully, the Swansea skipper.

20:25
GOALS! Bristol City have turned it around!

I'm paying the price for my sarcasm here and struggling to keep up as the goals continue to fly in across the six ties!

Now Bristol City have got in on the act, with two in four minutes to take the lead against Palace.

After Matt Taylor levelled the scores on 34 minutes, Milan Djuric put the home side in front and piled the pressure on Roy Hodgson...

Sportsmail's RALPH ELLIS at Ashton Gate: Roy Hodgson getting a nightmare rerun of Euro 2016 after Palace concede from a Hordur Magnusson long throw. City substitute Milan Djuric reacted quickest to drive the ball into the roof of the net after Martin Kelly failed to clear.

Then Palace concede from a Hordur Magnusson long throw. City substitute Milan Djuric reacted quickest to drive the ball into the roof of the net after Martin Kelly failed to clear.

20:24
Substitution for Swansea

Naughton has now come on for Olsson.

20:23
GOAL! Arsenal 0-1 Norwich! (Murphy, 34)

Well well!

Josh Murphy has put the away side in front with a delightful drink from just inside the penalty area.

It's a nightmare for Gunners goalkeeper Matt Macey, who is on debut and rushed off his line to meet him but could not make the save.

20:22
Injury worry for Swansea

37 mins: Oh dear this doesn't look good.

Olsson pulls up and looks to have hurt his hamstring. He's soldiering on but is all sorts of trouble and Kyle Naughton is going to come on.

20:20
Sportsmail's LAURIE WHITWELL at the King Power

Two finishes of real quality at the King Power in a game that had been bereft of action.

Pablo Hernandez opened curled a beauty of shot behind Harry Maguire and in off the bar to start the scoring.

Then Kelechi Iheanacho opened his Leicester account with a measured hit from 20 yards when the crowd had urged him to shoot earlier.

20:18
GOALS! Leicester 1-1 Leeds

Two goals in a few minutes at the King Power as first Pablo Hernandez puts the Championship side in front.

But their lead is short-lived as Kelechi Iheanacho pulls Leicester level. Breathless stuff.

20:17

30 mins: A lucky escape or two for United.

First Daley Blind tries to clear a cross with his head but gets it all wrong.

He manages only to head it into Swansea's Oliver McBurnie and it flies just wide of Romero's right-hand post.

Then Tuanzebe escapes for a clumsy challenge on Routledge as he looked to run in on goal. But nothing doing. The defender definitely pulled back Routledge when he was outside the penalty area and he's lucky...

20:13
PICTURED: Sportsmail's KEVIN QUIGLEY at the Emirates
20:10
GOAL! Bristol City 0-1 Crystal Palace (Sako, 21)

You wait 20 minutes for one and all that...

Suddenly it is a goal fest in the Carabao Cup as Bakary Sako puts struggling Crystal Palace in front at Bristol City.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek finds the Mali international, who fires under Luke Steele.

20:06
GOAL! Swansea 0-1 Man United (Lingard, 21)

What a goal from United.

Ander Herrera fires a sharp pass into Rashford who, with his back to goal, plays a delightful flick into the path of Lingard.

The England forward sprints clear and calmly passes the ball into the bottom corner. Lift off for United and the Carabao Cup tonight!

20:05
The latest from Bournemouth vs Middlesbrough from ADAM SHERGOLD

Bournemouth certainly the better team in the opening 20 minutes and it was almost a dream return for Callum Wilson, who has just fired inches wide after a Charlie Daniels cross bounced off Adam Forshaw and into his path.

Earlier Lys Mousset headed home from a Ryan Fraser free-kick only for the offside flag to be raised.

20:04

18 minutes: Ki gives away a needless foul (in a dangerous area) with a nasty foul on Anthony Martial.

Marcus Rashford whips it in from the left hand side and Angel Rangel can only put it out for another corner... which is easily dealt with.

20:03
Meanwhile at the Etihad...
20:01

15 mins: Oh Victor, Victor!

Lindelof is at it again at the back for United.

He appears to be wearing a trampoline in his socks tonight.

The centre-back tries to bring down a high ball and then thinks about knocking it inside but only manages to send it about 15 yards away, straight to a Swansea attacker. Fortunately for the visitors it comes to nothing.

19:58
It's a goal rush so far...

No side has yet to find a Carabao Cup goal tonight after 13 minutes.

City-Wolves about to get underway at the Etihad.

19:56
PICTURED: The early action at the Liberty
Swansea's Martin Olsson holds off Ander Herrera
Jesse Lingard dribbles with the ball
19:54

8 mins: It's Swansea's time to lay siege from the corner flag this time and Ki whips in a fantastic ball towards the penalty spot.

Alfie Mawson is in there and challenging and it's just about put behind for another corner, only for the referee Bobby Madley to award a goal kick.

19:51

5 mins: Who says teams don't care about the Carabao Cup?

Well, let's forget the 15 changes for now.

This game has started at a great pace and amid a good atmosphere in South Wales.

United enjoy a nice spell of possession and then Lingard fires a shot from outside the area which Nordfeldt tips over for another corner...

19:48

2 mins: Barely 80 seconds in and already an early chance for United!

Sam Clucas concedes a corner which is taken by Rashford and met by Chris Smalling.

But he can't guide his header on target. A half-chance, though.

19:46

19:44

The two sides are on the pitch here at the Liberty.

'Expect a reaction from United'

Leon Britton is the pundit for Sky Sports. He thinks Huddersfeild beating United was 'probably the worst result' for his side.

He said: 'There was a bit of a fall out from game, talk that the attitude wasn't spot on so expect Man United to have a reaction, who ever they put out... they're one of the biggest clubs in world so have to expect a reaction'

19:32
15 minutes to kick off at the Liberty...

United put four past Swansea the last time these two met. Will these two old colleagues be so cordial come the final whistle?

19:31
Final team news of the night from the Etihad...
19:24
Paul Clement believes Swans can be 'competitive'

'We know it's going to be a difficult test, whatever team they pick. They've made seven changes, we've done one more but I've picked a team that I believe can be competitive.

'We have to use home advantage, keep the game tight. Last time we played them here in Premier League it was tight until 69-70 minutes then it opened up...can't let that happen tonight.'

19:21
Sergio Romero: 'We need to improve'

So between them Paul Clement and Jose Mourinho have made 15 changes for tonight's clash on the back of defeats on the weekend.

One of the new names on the United teamsheet is Sergio Romero, who replaces David De Gea in goal.

Here's what he has had to say: 'For us it's a very important match today because it's a competition (in which) you need to win to continue and to rediscover victories.

On the defeat at Huddersfield: 'Football is football, sometimes you play good and sometimes not good, last match we were so-so. Now we have a new match against a difficult team on a difficult pitch but we need to improve.'

19:15
Sportsmail's ADAM SHERGOLD at Bournemouth vs Middlesbrough

Greetings from Bournemouth, which unfortunately isn’t living up to its status as one of England’s foremost holiday resorts. Drizzle and gusty winds off the Channel making it feel very autumnal at the Vitaliy Stadium.

A hardy band of Boro fans here - it’s just the 650-mile round trip from Teesside to Dorset or a mere five hours, 46 minutes by car (or presumably considerably longer by bus). It’s what might be classed as a ‘Badge of Honour’ game.

Changes galore here by both managers - eight by Eddie Howe for Bournemouth, 10 by Garry Monk for Middlesbrough - and a clear sense that the Carabao Cup doesn’t particularly mean that much to either club.

Up front for the Cherries tonight, however, is Callum Wilson, back at last from the knee ligament injury that has kept him out since January 31.

19:08
Angel Rangel has had his say

On whether victory can kick start their season: 'It's a different competition but we're not winning many games at home so definitely.

Swansea game plan: 'I'm not going to give you many clues but we're looking to stay compact try to get the ball as much as possible... hopefully we are going to put in a solid performance and win the game'

19:07
Jose Mourinho on tonight's clash...

On Swansea's home record, he told Sky Sports: 'The record doesn't mean anything what means is their players, they are full of good players... It's not a big deal, they're a good team.'

Championship leaders looking to emulate City

LAURIE WHITWELL: The skies over Molineux are bleak but inside the ground John Hendley is describing why the future is bright for Wolverhampton Wanderers

The club historian and programme editor has been a fan since 1964, and for the first time he can envisage a return to the golden days when Wolves won league titles and blazed a trail in Europe.

'When you talk to older supporters you get the sense that the flavour of those years is here again,' Hendley says. 'In local pubs it used to be what I call "we" and "they". "We were tremendous" or "They were rubbish". Now a lot of people are coming up to me saying, "We are going to do it this year!"

'I am 67, I could have retired but I still want to be part of this. Another two or three years out of me and we could be in the Premier League and sniffing around Europe – because that is the ultimate aim.'

Wolves' Leo Bonatini celebrates a goal against Aston Villa
18:16
Good evening, welcome to Sportsmail live

Plenty of top teams in action tonight, even if the big names are nicely wrapped up in cotton wool. A spot in the Carabao Cup last eight beckons for the winners, so for managers looking to ease the pressure in the league a win would be very welcome.

Our main focus will be on Manchester United's trip to Swansea but Arsenal, Manchester City, Leicester, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace are also in action against Championship opposition.
