Premier League sides average nearly nine changes each as Arsenal name completely different XI in farcical night of Carabao Cup action

  • Premier League clubs rang the changes as the Carabao Cup returned on Tuesday
  • Arsenal named a totally new XI against Norwich after their League win at Everton
  • They beat Norwich 2-1 thanks to No 62 Eddie Nketiah, who scored twice as a sub
  • Leicester City and Bournemouth both won despite making eight chances apiece
  • Man United defeated Swansea 2-0 after the sides made a combined 15 changes
  • Wolves bravely took a Man City side showing nine change to a penalty shootout
  • The only PL team to lose was Crystal Palace, who made 10 changes at Bristol City

Arsenal named an all-new line-up as Premier League clubs made nearly nine changes on average for Tuesday evening's Carabao Cup ties.

It worked for the most part as four of the five Premier League v Championship ties went in favour of the top-flight side, while a much-changed Manchester United beat an even-more-rotated Swansea 2-0 in the night's other game.

Arsene Wenger handed a first-team debut to goalkeeper Matt Macey and gave forgotten man Mathieu Debuchy a second cup start in as many weeks as not one of Sunday's Premier League line-up from the 5-2 win at Everton played from the start in their fourth-round victory over Norwich.

Wenger named an unfamiliar bench, with the seven players' squad numbers adding up to 384 - striker Chuba Akpom's number 32 shirt was the only one below 40.

No 62 was the magic number for the Gunners. Those were the digits worn by second-half substitute Eddie Nketiah, who rescued Arsenal with two goals - one to force extra time and another to secure a dramatic 2-1 win.

Crystal Palace made 10 changes, with only left back Patrick van Aanholt keeping his place. That didn't work out well for Roy Hodgson's team as they were thrashed 4-1 by Bristol City.

Manchester City made nine tweaks and scraped past Wolves on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes of play.

Surprisingly, Sergio Aguero - who netted in the shootout - was one of the two City players retained following Saturday's 3-0 defeat of Burnley as he chased the outright club goalscoring record.

There were eight changes each for Leicester - who saw off Leeds 3-1 - and Bournemouth - who overcame Middlesbrough by the same scoreline.

As well as Gunners keeper Macey, there were senior debuts for Man City's Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko and Bournemouth defender Jack Simpson, while the Cherries also handed a first start in nine months to long-term injury victim Callum Wilson.

Simpson and Wilson both got on the scoresheet.
