  • David Unsworth will hold talks with Everton about taking the job permanently
  • The caretaker boss will meet with chairman Bill Kenwright later on this week
  • Unsworth lost his first game in temporary charge 2-1 at Chelsea on Wednesday
  • But is confident of changing their fortunes if given chance to take job full-time

David Unsworth will head into talks with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright on Friday as he stakes a claim for the job full-time.

The 44-year-old, who has taken temporary charge of the beleaguered Merseyside club, ran champions Chelsea close in their Carabao Cup tie at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night in his first match on the touchline.

Although they eventually lost, Everton dominated large spells of the second half in a performance greatly improved from recent ones under Ronald Koeman, who was sacked on Monday.

Everton travel to Leicester City on Sunday and Unsworth believes he has the players at his disposal to turn their season around, if he is given the chance. They currently sit 18th in the Premier League table.

'We can't be where we are and expect to win every game, but there's a lot to work with there,' Unsworth said.

'There's an awful lot to work with there. It's a very proud performance tonight. Hopefully be as committed as that every game that I'm in charge.

'I've got a great relationship with the board. I've had no points return, or games total, that they've set. We'll just continue to work and plan, game-to-game, and take it from there.'

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte vowed to give his youngsters more opportunities after Charly Musonda, Kenedy — both 21 — and 17-year-old Ethan Ampadu all impressed.

'I'm very happy because I saw a lot of positive things, above all the young players' performance,' the Italian said.

'I think tonight Charly Musonda and Kenedy and Ampadu, don't forget he is only 17 years old, I think they played a good game. It's very important to trust in these players, because I repeat they deserve to have this chance.'
