Liverpool eye up £22m move for 'long-term target' Roma left-back Emerson Palmieri after ACL injury recovery

  • Liverpool are looking at adding defensive reinforcements this January
  • Jurgen Klopp's side have conceded 16 goals in nine Premier League games
  • Emerson Palmieri is on the cusp of returning from a torn ACL suffered in May

Jurgen Klopp is already eyeing defensive reinforcements this January and has identified Roma left-back Emerson Palmieri as one of his primary targets.

Liverpool have leaked 16 goals already this season in only nine games, and languish just inside the top-half of the Premier League table.

The German boss is desperate to add more solidity to his back line as the Reds look to force their way back into the top-four picture after a disappointing start.

Reports in Italy suggest that the Brazilian would have been a target in the summer, had he not sustained a torn ACL in May.

Gazzamercato claim that Klopp will return with a €25m (£22m) bid for the defender as he looks to rescue Liverpool's season.

They add that the 23-year-old will be offered a four-and-a-half-year deal.

Emerson is still not due back in first-team action until next month but his sale would represent a huge profit for the Italians.

The Brazilian joined for £1.8m from Santos back in 2015 after a loan spell at Palermo.

Though Klopp needs to strengthen his defensive forces, he is well stocked at left-back given the return to form of Alberto Moreno and the £8m arrival of Andy Robertson from Hull in the summer.
